Reliability signal

—

6 confirmed failure reports · Early signal · Data confidence: Low

Early signal (6 confirmed reports) suggests shorter ownership before failure (typical 13 mo), but that is not enough data for a D or F grade.

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20120519-A60C7-2147467443. Severity: Injury, No First Aid or Medical Attention Received. Matched catalog product: Apple Macbook Pro. Source model text: MAcbook Pro 17" serial number of laptop 'W8725520x94'. Incident: My apple laptop battery started to swell may 17 2012 after just over a year of service. The battery stills works fine and indicates 90% performance and charges fine. The battery started swelling even more the next morning. I called apple and they said i had to make an appointment to be able to bring it in and evening was soonest possible. By the evening the battery was even more swollen and giving off a foul chemical gas smell but still indicated perfect charge. the aluminum case was so swollen though by this point. The person helping me at the store looked at the battery and said it was intentional that the battery does that if it malfunctions. Well the battery was performing fine apart from giving off gas and now exposing dangerous sharp aluminum as I was about to find out. The person saying it was intentional to swell the battery and set it on the counter and said he couldnt do anything as the battery was now out of warranty. I picked up the battery and tried to show him how the battery was giving off gas and this was not how any battery should perform and that is when just by touching the battery where it has swollen apart cut my finger on the razor sharp surface now exposed due to "the intentional swelling apple designed into the battery"This swelling now exposed a razor sharp surface. There was blood all over the counter and battery and the guy didnt even care as '[REDACTED]' said "well Im also working on someone elses computer here while im helping you"and this was in

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20160827-C7E9B-2147414701. Matched catalog product: Apple Macbook Pro. Source model text: MacBook Pro 13". Incident: On July 16, 2016 I was working on my Apple MacBook Pro notebook computer at our vacation home, when I noticed, after a break, that the touch pad in the base of the computer was pushed up and out of the space it should occupy. At that same time I noticed an odor of overheated electronics, so I felt along the back of the computer and noticed a hot spot. After taking the back cover off, it was clear that the battery was the cause of the problem, since it was very hot, and it had expanded so much that it pushed the touch pad right up out of the computer. The immediate problem at that time was a label warning placed by Apple advising the user that they should not remove the battery. I contacted the nearest Apple store that I knew in Christiana, Delaware, but they indicated that they would not touch batteries at that store, even though they did other repairs.

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20150102-6FF3D-2147437076. Matched catalog product: Apple Macbook Pro. Incident: My Apple 13.3" MacBook Pro sustained an apparent internal battery failure and overheating event. The incident did not result in a fire, but the expansion and deformation of the battery during the event caused the trackpad to be partially ejected, and warped the aluminum unibody case.

Electric Wire or Wiring Systems (Excl Panelboards Recept (4062)

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20131216-EBC07-2147448994. Matched catalog product: Apple Macbook Pro. Incident: I'm worried that my laptop charger could cause a fire or produce a harmful electric shock. My wife and I have MACs and the wires are completely frayed on the charger. The worst part is, together we've had to replace 4 chargers over the last 3 years (on just 2 computers) because of this problem. We've had a 100% fail rate.

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20200901-00DBA-2147370087. Matched catalog product: Apple Macbook Pro. Incident: The battery on my MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016) swelled up to the point that it ruined the case and the keyboard. I believe this could have been a fire hazard. Batteries should not fail like this and I treated it very carefully, never letting it charge down very low and I only used the Apple supplied power brick and cord.

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20260819-C596B-2147312210. Severity: No Incident, No Injury. Product: Apple Macbook Pro (MacBook Pro M4 2024 14 inch serial number F57L5WKWN6). Incident: I own a MacBook Pro that has a swollen lithium battery that cracked the touchpad. This is very serious safety issue. The crack can possibly cause a fire, produce chemicals released to the touchpad and possible exposure to sharp glass. I have tried to get apple to repair the device, since a senior apple rep volunteered they have a problem with this model and the swollen battery. I discovered the crack 7 days after warranty was up. The computer has sat on my desk since purchasing the item. It does not travel. It would be impossible for me to crap the "tough glass" that they brag about. Last week I asked for a consideration to fix the defect, since I am a longtime customer. After 7 phone calls, 2 hang ups, a "senior advisor" flat out accused me of cracking the touchpad. I shared with the person they have admitted to a design problem with this product. I am in fear of a fire or chemical spillage from the crack. Apple's solution is charge me $500 to fix a computer I paid $2,000 for, after owning the computer for 12 months. I was disrespected by apple customer service when a service advisor called me on Sunday morning, when I made it clear I would not take a call on the Sabbath. Of course this person was obviously on the other side of the world and did not respect my religious beliefs. I have wasted hours trying to get apple to do the right thing. They are subjecting me to an unsafe product, that they admit has design flaws. This is unacceptable.
