Engine failure

ENGINE

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 9, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — NHTSA complaint #11550890

I had a "Service Electronic Throttle Control" light come on and my car went into limp mode. I called the dealer and they said to drive my car to the dealer to get it checked out. I confirmed with the dealer's service manager that it was safe to drive on the freeway in the limp mode. On my way there, my engine completely died - it went down to 25 mph on the freeway before it recovered a bit so that I could get off the freeway. Shortly after I got off the freeway, it died completely. The dealership told me its a known issued that these 2018/2019 Alfa Romeo's will suffer from oil pump failure, leading to sudden engine failure. Based on conversations I've seen on Facebook Alfa Romeo pages, many people have had these same issues with sudden engine failures on low mileage engines caused by oil pump failures. I thank God my car didn't completely die in the middle of the freeway - I could have easily been killed.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 9, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — NHTSA complaint #11713602

Twice now, my 2019 Giulia, which only has 27,100 miles, has flashed a check engine light and a "flash/lighting" symbol while driving at highway speeds. When this happened, the vehicle's throttle became unresponsive. This resulted in a sudden power loss--the accelerator would not respond to input, which creates a huge safety issue. I had it towed as I did not want to cause an accident. My trusted mechanic ran the diagnostic code (P008a) which indicated low pressure from the fuel pump. This is addressed in recall numbers 93C (Manufacturer) and 25V-586 (NHTSA). However, NHTSA does not show any active recalls for my vehicle VIN. My local dealership indicated this is because Alfa Romeo has not distributed the correct parts to the dealerships. Alfa Romeo customer service said this is incorrect. I am stuck with an unsafe and unreliable vehicle due to the precise recall item that Alfa Romeo says does not apply to my vehicle.

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 9, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — NHTSA complaint #11730233

The contact owns a 2019 Alfa Romeo Giulia. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V586000 (Fuel System, Gasoline); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle went into LIMP Mode and stalled. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was able to be restarted. The vehicle was taken to Firestone, and an oil change was performed, and the cabin air filter and water pump were replaced; however, the failure persisted, with the check engine, engine oil, and several other unknown warning lights intermittently illuminated. The vehicle was then taken to an independent mechanic, who determined that the fuel pump had low pressure and needed to be replaced. Government / agencyIndexed Oct 9, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — NHTSA complaint #11709563

There is an open safety recall on my vehicle since September 2025 with no updates on when a remedy will be available from Stellantis. The issue is that fuel supply to the engine can be cut off causing the vehicle to lose power unexpectedly and go LOMP. I cannot drive the vehicle in this state because it is dangerous if the engine were to cut off unexpectedly at highway speeds, especially since I have a baby. Safety recall information: Issue date: Sep 09, 2025 Manufacturer Recall Number: 93C NHTSA Recall Number: 25V-586 Recall Status: Recall Incomplete, remedy not yet available It is unacceptable that Stellantis have still not provided a remedy or an ETA to fix the problem even after 4 months. My car is sitting idly in the garage and I'm paying hundreds of dollars every month in loan and insurance costs without being able to drive. I have called my dealership several times and they don't have an update from the manufacturer yet either. I would like to make a formal complaint against Stellantis to fix this issue with immediate urgency since it is dangerous to drive the car in its current state and I'm just losing money without being able to use it.

The contact owns a 2019 Alfa Romeo Giulia. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V586000 (Fuel System, Gasoline); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the check engine warning light and several unknown warning lights illuminated, and the vehicle unintendedly shifted to neutral(N) and lost motive power. The contact pulled over to the side of the road, turned off, and restarted the vehicle; however, there was a delay before the vehicle reached 35 MPH while driving. The contact stated that after refueling the vehicle, the warning lights turned off. The failure reoccurred whenever the fuel level was low. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the failure was related to the fuel pump, but the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and the contact was advised to wait for the second recall notification to proceed with the scheduling of the recall repair. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 9, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — NHTSA complaint #11747585

The vehicle is subject to Alfa Romeo Safety Recall 93C (NHTSA Campaign 25V586) for a defective Fuel Delivery Module. The safety defect is an active, un-remedied hazard. The vehicle is currently located at [Name of Alfa Romeo Dealership] for an official diagnosis and is available for inspection. The vehicle has an active safety recall for sudden, catastrophic engine stalling at highway speeds due to fuel pump warping. Because the manufacturer has not provided a remedy or a safe alternative transport, I am forced to choose between driving a vehicle with an acknowledged highway-stalling hazard or being completely deprived of my transportation. The vehicle cannot be safely operated in commerce until Recall 93C is performed. The vehicle is currently undergoing inspection by the manufacturer's authorized technicians at the Alfa Romeo dealership. It has also been reviewed administratively through a claim with the National Center for Dispute Settlement (NCDS), which was denied based on mileage despite the active federal safety recall. The vehicle displayed an "Excessive Oil" warning and experienced heavy smoking from the engine bay beginning around June 25, 2026. While the vehicle has also been undergoing cooling system repairs, the presence of these severe engine warnings and thermal symptoms creates an immediate escalation of risk when combined with the active 93C fuel pump recall.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

86 months

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 9, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — NHTSA complaint #11759890

1. The fuel delivery/fuel pressure system is malfunctioning. The vehicle has experienced fuel-pressure related diagnostic trouble codes, loss of power, stalling, and limp mode. The fuel pressure sensor was replaced, but the same diagnostic codes and symptoms continued. The symptoms are consistent with the fuel delivery module/fuel pump defect described in NHTSA recall 25V586. The vehicle and affected components are available for inspection upon request. 2. The vehicle repeatedly enters limp mode and has experienced loss of power, stalling, and severe shifting problems, especially with low fuel. I have had to drive 20–30 miles on the freeway while unable to accelerate or shift normally, nearly causing multiple accidents around traffic and semi-trucks. I regularly transport my family and children, greatly increasing the safety risk from an unexpected loss of power or stalling. 3. No. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center. However, the vehicle has experienced repeated loss of power, stalling, limp mode, and shifting problems, along with the same two fuel-pressure related diagnostic trouble codes. The fuel pressure sensor was replaced, but the codes and symptoms remained. 4. No. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or an insurance representative. 5. Yes. The check-engine light appeared with codes P018D and P018B. The vehicle subsequently experienced limp mode, loss of power, stalling, and severe shifting issues, especially with low fuel. Replacing the fuel pressure sensor did not resolve the codes or symptoms.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

61 months

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 9, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — NHTSA complaint #11605232

While driving on the highway I got an error alert "Service Electronic Throttle" and my gas pedal stopped working almost immediately. I was fortunate enough to coast to the next exit and pull off in the shoulder. The car would not start. I unplugged the battery and waited 5 minutes. After reconnecting the battery, I was able to drive 4 miles home, and the next day I drove 7 miles to the Alfa dealer. Since I reset the battery in order to start the car, they told me there were no codes visible and they sent me home with the car. I drove for 70 miles until the same issue happened. This time I was on a road with no shoulder but was able to pull off into a parking lot. I tried to reset the battery again to make it home but I was only able to make it about 100 yards down the road and I pulled off into a construction driveway. I reset the battery once last time to make it another 100 yards down the road until I coasted into a parking lot. Each time the gas pedal completely stopped responding and I was left to cruise as far as I could. If the car turns off and won't start again you are not able to put it into neutral and move it to a safe spot. When I brought it to the dealer the second time they gave me an error code of "P008A-00" and replaced the fuel pump. They also told me I should try to always use the same gas station and never drive below a quarter tank of gas. There is a service bulletin for this issue in 2017-2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia's but I have not seen anything yet for 2019. I was very luck in all 4 instances of the gas pedal failing but if it went out while trying to pull across multiple lanes of traffic I could have easily been hit. You can also only make it as far as the car will coast so I could have been stranded in the middle lane on the highway if there was heavier traffic.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

14 months

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 9, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — NHTSA complaint #11353843

(Vehicle is 2019 with 7404 miles recorded on date of incident). Morning of 18TH Aug 2020. The car sat overnight so was 'cold' when I started it. I immediately selected reverse and began backing up (exact speed unknown, but 'slow'). Approx 10 secs after starting the engine the very strong odor of gasoline entered the cockpit - I immediately shut off the engine. Exiting the vehicle I could see a trail of fluid 10 ft long on the concrete driveway and the scent identified it as gasoline. I lifted the hood & gasoline was all over the top of the engine and dripping down off the underside of the hood. Looking closer I could see pools of gas had collected anywhere there was a depression in which liquid could collect on & around the engine. Several liters of gasoline had been ejected over the engine. Car was towed to the nearest alfa service dealership (golling, bloomfield hills). The dealership replaced a broken/split fuel hose on the passenger side of the engine under warranty. They verbally told me the part was sent to alfa corporate and I should contact them to follow the investigation. I contacted alfa corporate and through email exchanges, discovered that alfa corporate will not be investigating this safety issue at all. I attach all the email correspondence below. My very serious concern is that the dealership verbally said they had no idea how this could have happened - "maybe a weak spot" - but alfa corporate would investigate. At that point I was satisfied. Then several days later alfa corporate informed me that the dealership guess of "maybe a weak spot" would be the official conclusion and end of the investigation. I mention it several times in my (attached) emails but it is obvious that I avoided being in a moving fireball by only minutes and maybe luck. An investigation by an engineer is the minimum I would expect from alfa corporate.*dt*dt*jb*dt*jb*as

Airbag / restraint failure

AIR BAGS

61 months

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 9, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — NHTSA complaint #11624557

I was in an accident on 7/25/2024, my vehicle was completely stopped and pulled over. The impact occurred when another vehicle, traveling at around 35 mph or less (the posted speed limit), struck my vehicle with significant force, the rear suspension of my structural frame of my vehicle was severely damaged. Given the intensity of the collision and the resulting damage, I’m concerned that none of my airbags did not deploy, despite the damage being substantial. In light of this information and my vehicle being totaled loss, I have a few additional follow-up questions: 1. Since my vehicle was stationary at the time of impact and the other vehicle was moving at a considerable speed, could the lack of deceleration on my part have influenced the airbag system’s response? How does the system account for impacts where the struck vehicle is at a complete stop? 2. You mentioned that neither the engine compartment nor the structural frame rails were compromised, yet the repair estimate indicates severe damage to the frame. Could there be a discrepancy between the vehicle photos and the actual damage assessed later? 3. Given the nature of the impact and the resulting damage, is it possible that certain sensors related to airbag deployment could have malfunctioned or were unable to accurately measure the severity of the crash? 4. The airbags are designed to deploy based on the severity of a frontal crash and longitudinal deceleration. Can clarification be provided on how side or angular impacts are accounted for in the vehicle’s safety system? Is there any supplemental protection, such as side airbags, that would activate in those types of collisions? 5. Given that the accident involved a side impact, could there be factors related to side-impact protection that should have activated other safety features? 6. Are there additional sensors or mechanisms that monitor the severity of non-frontal impacts?
