Power Sanders (803)

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 28, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — SaferProducts.gov incident

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20190518-5BD90-2147380897. Severity: Injury, No First Aid or Medical Attention Received. Matched catalog product: Ryobi model P108; part number 130429075. Source model text: S651D. Incident: I was using my Ryobi 1/4 sheet sander, model number S651D to sand down some cabinets we were building when about 30 seconds into the sanding, the thing exploded in my hand. Particles hit my body and face though lucky for us, nothing got into our eyes. The sander broke into about 30 little pieces at high speed. I doubt it could have done any serous injury but left scratches however if it would have happened closer to my face, the impact could definitely have taken out an eye.

I am just alerting you so that you have update information about this product. As of now, I have yet been able to reach anyone at Ryobi despite 3 attempts.

Source model text: Ryobi Model number SS26 RY28045. Incident: I was using my Ryobi gas string trimmer and noticed that fuel was leaking from the fuel tank at the point where the fuel lines enter the tank. Fearing that the fuel would catch fire and possibly explode, I immediately stopped using it. This has happened before, but I just now located the source of the fuel leak. I believe this is a defective product because there is no washer or other seal to prevent fuel from leaking. This product should be recalled. It is a Ryobi gas string trimmer model number SS26 - Ry28045.

Source model text: Palm Sander Model number PL406. Incident: I was using a Ryobi battery operated palm Sander. The sander stopped vibrating as an internal mechanism got stuck. I put the sander down and did some other work. About 5 minutes later the sander began to smell like burning plastic, spew out smoke and likely caught fire internally. I say likely because I blew hard to where the smoke was coming and it stopped. I also immediately removed the battery. The sander was also very warm to the touch. About 3 minutes later the sander was again at room remperature.

I removed the battery & found a melted mess on the battery stub [pos. side] & a melted inside of my blower. Ryobi says the battery's are out of warrantee & they can't help. The blower is in warrantee & I have to take to The Home Depot tool rental for a repair. I'm afraid to charge these battery's indoors any more because of a fire.

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20170817-7CC52-2147398047. Severity: Injury, First Aid Received by Non-Medical Professional. Product: Ryobi model P108; part number 130429075 (Ryobi One+ 4Ah battery pack). Incident: I was using a Ryobi One+ drill. I inserted a 4Ah battery pack into the drill. I had only been using the drill 10-15 seconds when the battery terminal melted. The heat melted the grip/handle on the drill and burned my hand. I tried to put another battery in the drill, but the battery damaged the drill and it won't work anymore. There was a recall a couple of years ago on a 4Ah battery, but this battery was a different part number. The battery from my drill was a model P108, part number 130429075. I have contacted Ryobi customer service about six times. They have assured me that the safety department would contact me, but it has been about 10 weeks since I began contacting them. I haven't received a phone call from anyone to resolve these issues or inquire about the incident.
