SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20131218-D5A6B-2147448928. Matched catalog product: Sony NP-FX110. Source model text: Sony Lithium Ion Rechargeable Battery Pack NP-FX110. Incident: While using this Sony DVD player, the battery pack split open as the internal battery expanded and swelled. I have ready other reports and replies by Sony that the pack does not pose a risk, but I do not want to leave this defective item within reach of curious children who may attempt to take it apart, exposing themselves to the battery materials inside.

Source model text: Sony DVP-FX930 (player) with Sony NP-FX110 (battery pack). Incident: I own a portable Sony 9-inch DVD player (model number NP-FX110) which, to my surprise, stopped functioning suddenly. It wasn't dropped, spilled on or put in the sun. It was safe in it's case in my climate controlled locker at work. Strange. Upon inspection I noticed what others have reported to saferproducts.gov. The battery pack is swollen!

Incident: Battery case on my Sony DVD player has cracked open due to swelling of the Li-Ion battery. The unit was not on charge and had not been used for several weeks. The unit was without problem after its last charge and use. No injuries occurred due to this swelling, but has rendered the unit unusable. I am concerned of what could have happened if this had occurred when the unit was charging.

Incident: While charging our Sony DVP-FX820 portable DVD player, the battery pack (NP-FX110) inside the battery case swelled up and split the battery case open along one side. The battery was also very hot at the time that the battery case split open. I disconnected the charger and removed the battery from the DVD player, and placed it outside the house in case it leaked or caught fire. Now that it has cooled down it remains split open and the battery pack inside remains swollen up. I cannot use the battery in this condition.

The battery is a Lithium Ion rechargeable battery pack made in China. It was being charged with the Sony charger that came with the player, Model No. AC-FX160. I have not yet found the receipt, but believe it was purchased around two years ago.

Incident: While children were watching a DVD, the attached lithium ion rechargeable battery pack swelled and split open. SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20150211-82F7A-2147435494. Severity: Unspecified. Matched catalog product: Sony NP-FX110. Incident: The lithium ion rechargeable battery pack (Sony model # NP-FX110) on my children's portable DVD player (Sony model # DVP-FX930) spontaneously expanded in the case breaking the battery pack. This occurred during or after normal use, in normal temperature, without any warning. There were no injuries, however this appears to be a significant safety concern for the battery leaking or exploding, since the defect compromised the case. I have noticed that there are multiple other reports of the same defect for this battery on SaferProducts.gov.

Incident: Sony DVD Rechargeable Battery Model Number NP-FX110 over-heated. Inside the battery case, one of the two [REDACTED] 3.7V Lithium Ion Battery Cells Model Number 5548135 swelled without bursting the protective metal jacket that protects the lithium ion batteries from the air. However, the swelling was great enough to burst the exterior, plastic, protective-case of the NP-FX110. Fortunately, the lithium-ion battery did not burst when my children tried to squish the battery case back together. Had the lithium-ion battery burst when squished, it may have caused a fire.

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20140219-4318B-2147447135. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Sony NP-FX110 (Lithium ion rechargeable battery). Incident: While my friend was watching a movie on a portable DVD player, the battery swelled up and cracked open the housing, identically to the existing report on this product at www.saferproducts.gov/ViewIncident/1351022 The DVD player, Sony model DVP-FX810, was undamaged and still functional using its AC adaptor. The battery model is Sony NP-FX110. The unit was purchased from RadioShack on 11/30/2010 and had previously been used in the store as a demo unit for an unknown duration. Apparently you have reported this as not being a safety concern, my view is that an incident of this nature is a safety hazard and apparently not an isolated case. For example how do I properly dispose of this battery? New batteries are no longer available from Sony Corp. and are apparently only available on eBay and similar sites.
