SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20140503-27F65-2147444854. Matched catalog product: Craftsman 917-286450. Source model text: Sears Craftsman LTX1000 model # 917.272420, part # 184900. Incident: My Sears Craftsman Riding Lawn Tractor LTX1000, model # 917.272420, part # 184900 purchased in 2001 new from Sears and owned by me this entire time developed a leak in the gas tank. The tank is plastic and it developed four small cracks at the corners of the tank just above the mid line where the two sections are joined together. The cracks appear to be caused by the stress of vibrations coming through the frame the tank attaches to.

A visual inspection showed that the fuel tank was seeping fuel around the seam of the top and bottom halves of the plastic fuel tank. It was necessary to drain the fuel tank below the seam to stop the leaking fuel. The fuel tank is Craftsman part No. 197766.

As I engaged the blades, one of the the Easy Blade holders (Part #580954003) failed, resulting in one of the mower blades being thrown from under the mower, landing about 25 feet from the machine. The mower has been used multiple times this spring and showed no signs of an issue - the incident happened without warning. There were no injuries.

Source model text: 917.288560. Incident: One month ago I purchased a Craftsman YT4000 Lawn Tractor. For the most part I'm happy with the product. But I've noticed that the backs of the spokes are hollow and uncomfortable when turning the tractor. Today I was dismounting to open the gate to my backyard when my finger became caught in one of the open spaces under the steering wheel spokes. Somehow my finger got stuck but I kept going. I tore a chunk out of my index finger and thought for a few moments that I'd broken it. I called Sears to find out of a safer steering wheel was available. Not only is no replacement available but no one seemed interested in correcting what I consider to be a hazard.

Incident: Hello, I have a fairly new Craftsman Lawn Tractor Model# 917203901/ Serial# 052316D015088. I was doing some yearly maintenance and noticed that one of the transmission exterior shafts has been rubbing up against the plastic fuel tank. There is definitely some minor damage to the tank. I fear that if this continues the tank will rupture eventually. Having 3 gallons of gasoline running down on top of a hot transmission/trans axle is a great safety concern for me, and in my opinion a design/manufacturing oversight. I have some photos that I can share. Please let me know what I can do to help get this report and resolved as soon as possible.

Incident: I own two Craftsman garden tractors that both contain the same fuel tank #151346. I have noticed that both of them have been smelling like fuel for a while and now are clearly leaking gas. I removed the tanks and both of them have numerous cracks at the seams that extend out into the tank. These tanks are fully enclosed and padded. I did not know if they had been recalled or not, but I wanted to see what could be done. Not only were the mowers very expensive, but both breaking the same and causing a fire hazard can't be by chance. Thanks for your time and help.

This part is located below the tractor engine and thus cannot be seen by the operator during operation of the mower. A piece of this part subsequently fell to the ground and was hit by the rotary mower. There are at least five points of impact on the part from contact with the rotary mower blade. It did not leave the deck as projectile. If it had left as a projectile, it would have been dangerous to people and property. A washer on the piece remains missing. It may have fallen to the ground or may have left the mower deck as a projectile. Sears has replaced the part, but it has the same factory drilled hole as the original part. This hole is

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20120530-0DE2D-2147467102. Severity: No Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: Craftsman 917-286450. Source model text: 917.288562. Incident: I purchased a Craftsman Lawn Tractor online from sears.com on 4-6-12. The unit was delivered to my home on 4-13-12. During a pre-start up inspection of the unit, I found that the 2 mandrel pulley guards were missing. I contacted sears.com regarding the missing guards and was informed that the unit is being sold without the guards. I also checked the illustrated parts breakdown for the machine and it does not show the guards as a factory installed part. I am of the opinion that operating the Lawn Tractor without the guards in place is safety hazard and could possibly cause personal injury to the operator. Guards around mandrel pulleys are normally installed on all Lawn and Garden Tractors regardless of the manufacture. This prevents the possibility of loose clothing, feet and hands from being caught between the drive belt and the mandrel pulley. I fail to understand why sears.com would market this model of machine without guards, but include the guards on the other machines listed in their 2011 Customer Buying Guide for Riding Equipment. It appears to me that if it is mandated by sears.com to include the required guards for all the other Riding Equipment they market, the unit I purchased should have the required guards installed on it. Note - ANSI B71.1-2003 SAFETY STANDARDS FOR RIDING MOWERS states in part: Do not operate machine without the entire grass catcher, discharge guard, or other safety devices in place and working. In the interest of personal safety, I am requesting

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20160713-D763B-2147416890. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Craftsman 917-286450 (Craftsman Lawn Tractor DGS 6500 Model Number: 917-286450 Serial: 121907B001238). Incident: Abbreviated version - the longer version I just wrote did not save - frustrating! I'm the original owners of a craftsman model 917-286450 lawn tractor DSG 6500). I've owned the machine for approximately 4-5 years and keep it in excellent working order. A few weeks ago while mowing my lawn in the early cool morning, I noticed a burning smell and soon noticed that the motor had caught fire. Within seconds the machine was burning uncontrollably. I quickly jumped off the machine unharmed and raced for a nearby water hose. I became increasing concerned about the machine exploding and injury me and/or my kids who can running with curiosity. Potentially just as alarming was the possibly of a huge grass fire threatening all the residences along the periphery of our property. Fortunately for all I was able to extinguish the fire from a marginally safe distance; however, I was seconds from calling 911 emergency.... extremely scary situation!!
