9 confirmed failure reports · Early signal · Data confidence: Low

Early signal (9 confirmed reports) suggests shorter ownership before failure (typical 6 mo), but that is not enough data for a D or F grade.

Incident: I suffered a burn injury from a FitBit 5. I was wearing the device as a fitness recording monitor. The burn was at least a 2nd degree, if not more. I reported the injury to FitBit in August 2024. They were not helpful at all. Nor, did they inform me that they were aware that their devices were causing injury, or relay to me that they were under investigation by the CPSC which led to a multi-million dollar fine.

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20221108-F37CA-2147352857. Severity: Injury, First Aid Received by Non-Medical Professional. Matched catalog product: Fitbit Charge 5. Incident: Today, I was burned by my smart watch! Since 2017, I have been wearing a fitbit watch. I purchased my newest model this July 2022. I typically wear my fitbit all the time- it is a watch, and it is useful and also quite stylish. Today I noticed all of a sudden that my wrist began to hurt. Upon further inspection, I noticeed that there was a large red mark under the fitbit sensor on my skin. To me, it seemed like my skin had burned. After an hour, the burned area is still bright red and painful. The burn is even in the shape of the sensor, so I have no doubt that it came from the sensor itself. This is not a rash or skin irritation, but a burn on my skin. After years of wearing a fitbit, this has never happened to me before.

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20221024-E652A-2147353183. Severity: Injury, Seen by Medical Professional. Matched catalog product: Fitbit Charge 5. Incident: Two weeks after purchasing, my Fitbit charge 5 got very hot on my skin and I removed it. Later when I went to put it on, it no longer worked. I called them and went through all the troubleshooting prompts. I took it back to the store and exchanged it for a new one. A week after wearing the new one, it burned my wrist. I had to go to an urgent care to get medication to treat my burn.

Incident: My charge 5 Fitbit burned my wrist. I took it off one morning to take a shower and no, there was redness where my Fitbit had been. After showering, I dried my arm put the Fitbit back on again and the next morning I noticed that I had blisters and scarring redness underneath there I used it every day as my Fitbit tracker. I was wearing it at this point in time. It looks like it may be starting to heal over, but its very scaly. The only thing I can think of is that the watch mustve overheated. I want to report this because after I had [REDACTED] what happened January I noticed that the Fitbits were being recalled and I thought oh my goodness Im not the only person.

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 16, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — SaferProducts.gov incident

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20230131-264CA-2147351030. Severity: Injury, Emergency Department Treatment Received. Product: Fitbit Charge 5 (Fitbit Charge 5 , Advanced fitness + health tracker, Platinum Stainless Steel Case & Steel Blue band). Incident: I was pouring the solvent Toluene from one container into another container and when I tilted the container I was pouring from up to get the last of it out the vapors suddenly ignited causing a fireball to shoot out from the container I was filling. I was wearing a Fitbit Charge 5 that I believe initiated the explosion and fire. The Fitbit was right over the mouth of the container as I was pouring the Toluene. As I rotated my left arm with the container it caused the Fitbit to activate and instantly the fumes around my left hand ignited causing severe burns on my hand, arm and face as the fireball expanded. I don't know if anyone else has experienced this but i was unaware of any warning about using a Fitbit product around hazardous materials and could find no warnings in the consumer manuals.
