Only shutting off the power at the breaker box stopped it. The stove was purchased less than 4 years ago and features a convection oven and ceramic glass stovetop. The convection feature was not in use at the time of the malfunction.

Incident: Kenmore flat top stove heats to very high temperature although the knob is turned to a low temperature. Burner does not always cut off when the knob is turned into the off position. Problem is typically front large burner on left of stove (facing stove). I have called Sears, but they say this model is not included in the current recall. I am trying to be preventive in this causing a fire or injury.

Incident: The outer glass on my oven door exploded and sent glass about 10 ft. in all directions. Thankfully nobody was in the kitchen at the time. Had someone been in the kitchen (especially a small child) they could have been seriously injured or blinded. Even if I have this repaired, I will feel like I have a time bomb in my kitchen. I can see by looking online, that this has been reported hundreds of times on the Kenmore ovens over at least the past 10 years. My oven is just 3 years old. Sears is obviously not addressing the issue. I did talk to them and they did acknowledge that this is a common problem but they said they will / do not have to do anything (including cover repairs costs) until a recall is issued. I have to wonder what the hold up is.

We opened the door and the dishwasher continued o run, ignoring all button presses. We ran to the box and turned off the breaker. The entire floor was filled with a powerful white haze of melted plastic and electrical wire. There was a low sheen from the melting plastic buttons, indicating that there was a fire in the door. Afraid of possible electricity still present we placed a wet towell over the odor, opened the odors and windows and went outside. After 15 minutes, we checked and eventually removed the interior door panel, and exposed the control board. It was charred with burnt wires. There was burned plastic and the control pod was partially melted. The entire door was severely damaged. I later noticed lung irritation and believe I received several lungfuls of smoke from burning plastic

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20121014-B09B6-2147462870. Severity: Injury, No First Aid or Medical Attention Received. Matched catalog product: Kenmore 790.9446.3700. Source model text: 79096643700. Incident: I have a Kenmore Elite Range Model number 7909664**** that has almost burned my house down twice now. This unit does not seem to be in past recalls, but I have seen MANY of the same issues by other consumers reported online. First there have been problems with the element not turning off after it has been turned off. This is the same problem I have seen wide spread on models that are very similar to my model. Sometimes, we have to touch the off sensor several times to get the element, or part of the element, to turn off. Because of this, my son caught a pot holder on fire when he left it on the stove top not realizing that the element had not turned off. Luckily, no one was injured. The main issue we have had is the oven unit that heats up extremely fast and past the set temperature. The unit will start beeping and flashing a "run away temperature" code but continues to heat up, and the controls are useless. The oven went from off to over 600 degrees in less than five minutes and the food inside the oven was smoking with small flames. It would not turn off with the controls and I had to run downstairs to kill the power via the breaker. My husband burned himself opening the EXTREMELY hot oven to (1) get out the smoking, burning food and (2) try to cool the inside temperature down. We only know it was 600 degrees and climbing because we have a thermometer in the oven so we always know the correct oven temperature. I truly believe that this range and other similar models are a s

Incident: Kenmore Elite Smooth top range Model #790.94453700 Serial # VF74441886. We had cooked some biscuits on the convection setting @ 350 degrees for 14 minutes. We were sitting in the living room after dinner and heard a strange noise coming from the kitchen. We ran into the kitchen to see flames and smoke pouring out from behind the stove. I ran to the oven and tried to pull it out and realized I should shut of the breaker first. After flipping off the breaker, we pulled out the oven to see it was still on fire. We were able to put out the fire with water. After letting the range cool down, I pulled it out the rest of the way and saw the fire had started at the pigtail mounting block. It had completely melted down and caught the rest of the wiring in the back of the unit on fire and had burnt a hole in the wall behind the range. The wall is also covered with dark black soot from the fire.

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20211109-56BE3-3490564. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Kenmore 790.9446.3700 (Oven Range Kenmore). Incident: The consumer indicates that she preheated her oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and ten minutes later a heard a popping and crackling sound coming from the kitchen. When the consumer checked, there were flames coming from out of digital display where all the numbers are shown and her kitchen was filling up with black smoke. The consumer immediately called the Fire Department and they advised her to get out of her house and wait for them. By the time the Fire Department arrived, approximately five to ten minutes after they were called, the fire had extinguished itself. Once they finished their inspection, they informed the consumer that the fire was strictly due to her oven range and not her electrical system. The consumer contacted the retailer and the representative she spoke to informed her that they could not assist her as the unit was no longer under warranty. The consumer tried to explain that she was just trying to report the fire but they did not take a complaint. The consumer states that, prior to the incident, the cooktop was used three to four times per week whereas the oven once weekly. The consumer is unsure if she will keep her unit for at least the next thirty days in case an investigation ensues.
