Sears has known about this problem and has not sent out notices. We are lucky our house didn't burn.

Incident: I purchased a Kenmore Model 116.27514 vacuum cleaner in Feb 2010. This is a cannister vacuum with the sweeper mounted on a handle. The sweeper can be detached to allow different attachments to be fitted to the handle. In Aug, 2011 I noticed that the light and vacuum were turning on and off on the sweeper as I pulled it back and forth. When I investigated I found the insulation on the electrical cord that connects the sweeper to the handle completely worn through. There were wires bundled in that sheath and the insulation on the wiring was also worn though. There was a black area as if something had arc-ed. I called Sears and ordered a replacement part figuring that the cord had been damaged or mishandled by me. I installed the replacement part and have used the sweeper roughly 50 times since then. Last week I noticed that the same wear had occured. I caught it early enough that the insulation on the wires is not worn. I know that I have not mishandled the vacuum or done anything unusual that would have caused this. I attribute the wear to poor design and feel continuing to use this product poses a risk.

Pressing any of the controls would not turn the broiler off. Only way to turn it off was to open the circuit breaker. When the breaker was closed the broiler came back on again. This is a fire hazard and the symptoms are almost the same as those outlined in Comsumer Product Safety Commission recall #09-333 where the surface heating elements come on by themselves. Neither the oven nor the cook top was on, or in use at the time. I heard a noise from the kitchen area, smelled the odor, then smoke. The Daytona Beach Fire Department responded and advised it was my oven. After, the fire department cleared the scene, I called Sears Home Repair at 1-800-4 my home. Sears advised they would not be able to send a repair contractor out until Saturday, February 16, 2013. I asked if they could get someone to respond sooner as I would be out of town that weekend at a pre scheduled conference. Sears replied that was the earliest they could send someone. I replied, that was unacceptable and I would be forced to contact another repair company. I contacted Superior Services appliance repair in Daytona Beach Florida. They sent a repairman out that afternoon on February 13th. The repairman removed the back panel where he found the parts that caught on fire. The parts were 1 fan motor part number 5304467898, relay board part number 316418101, board part number 316460900. Had I not been home at the time I could have possibly lost my pets and my home due to the this appliances internal fire. Further, I had to wait two weeks for the parts which were coming

Incident: We purchased a Kenmore (Sears) Elite Large model Washing Machine in November 2017 with full extended warranty. On May 14, 2018 after a loud "thumping" sound was heard, loud "explosion" type sound occurred: the lid of this washer made of glass had shattered suddenly and violently for no apparent reason. The lid, made of a type of safety glass had blown slivers of glass all over our laundry room, and inside the bowl of the washer itself. The majority of the glass remained in the frame, cracked into hundreds of pieces. I called Sears service and initially they did not want to "cover" the incident under warranty, essentially claiming we had somehow dropped something on the lid or otherwise negligently caused the breakage, a completely incorrect assumption. After insistence that they do something to honor the warranty they agreed to send a serviceman to inspect the washer. He came out the next day. His assessment was that the washer was exhibiting a problem he characterized as a "Manufacture's Design Defect" and remarked that he had encountered this problem two months previously on the same model washer. He added that the lid latching mechanism, both the mechanical elements and/or electronic control board and associated electronics were at fault and had caused the explosive shattering of the glass by stressing the metal frame of the lid at the time of breakage. He also reported that he had ordered a full set of components to replace the various latching elements and that DURING his installation of the new control board that same thing happened--the lid exploded right under his f
