The component or system that failed and malfunctioned, is the air conditioning drain hose that leaked water into the bottom of the inside of the car, causing extensive damage to the rugs, padding, soundproof insulation, and damage to the metal frame of the bottom of the car. Corrosion of the electrical system. The safety was at risk due to the sickening mildew swampy odor coming from inside the car from an accumulation of stagnant water. It caused me headaches, sinus infections, and aggravated my asthma. Yes, Toyota dealership and SERV PRO and independent lab. Yes, the vehicle component has been inspected by the Insurance company and dealership and SERV PRO, and independent Lab. Yes, there were warnings and symptoms of the problem which appeared less than a year after the new 2020 Toyota camry was bought.

Did not happen to this vehicle, but others the same year. I am a tech who has seen multiple failures of the crankshaft position plate which is mounted between the flywheel and crankshaft brake causing engine to shut down while driving due to crank position sensor not receiving signal. I am concerned because my wife drives one which is the vin I gave, that her car may cut off in traffic causing a accident. This part is defective with holes cut around it where the new replacement part is solid. This should be replaced at no cost to customers when vehicle warranty coverage has run out. Information below is for a vehicle that I worked on and have seen 3 others. One resulting in engine & transmission replacement due to excessive damage from plate coming apart. I work for Toyota & don't want my identity shared with them.

Brakes under constant pressure took longer to engage. One minute later while pulling into parking stall the brake pedal went to floor and one pump immediately after it engaged. Simultaneously, the car accelerated and jumped a curb and one foot into the landscape. Had the acceleration continued and/or the brakes not engaged the vehicle would have hit a tree in another 3'. This tree was about 18"-24" diameter. One hour later cautiously drove to Toyota dealer who performed inspection of brake system, test drove, and scanned the computer system. They found no abnormal codes for the time of the incidents. They could not replicate the issues. There were no warning indicators noticed during the incident. Scan data and incident report sent to Toyota Field Agents confirmed the described problem was not found in the system.

I leased this vehicle in July 2020 for 24 months, the battery is not dependable; frequently, at random times, the car won't start.. I have had to call for assistance 6 times. Toyota explained that the battery has a defect called parasitic drain because of overload from 40 computers and only solution is to drive at least 1/2 hour twice a week. I am 88 years old with macula degeneration and consider this an unsafe requirement. Toyota suggested buying a new battery but if, as stated by the mechanic, the battery is getting continuously drained by overload, that makes no sense, I asked if they could block off some of the drainage (like Bluetooth) they said not this model.i complained that I wasn't informed of this defect before buying and they explained it was in the manuel which I didn't receive until I signed the agreement.

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 9, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — NHTSA complaint #11303041

Slow acceleration during 1ST 1 or 2 gears. Almost had multiple accidents in highway due to slow acceleration when changing lanes. The vehicle does not immediately respond to acceleration when accelerator pedal is used. The vehicle has a couple of seconds delay until it changing into next gear. Dealer non responsive. I brought it into my Toyota dealer and the service technician drove my car with me in the passenger seat. I explained that my previous (3) V6 Toyota camry's did not have any problems with acceleration, he totally understood. The new 8- speed transmission has different shift settings which explains the acceleration delay and sometimes causes a jerky motion from a dead stop, driving in stop & go traffic or while entering a highway. According to the tech, they have been provided with no fixes for this problem and that the car will "learn" my driving habits the more I drive it.

The check engine light illuminated on my 2020 Toyota Camry XSE 2.5L with approximately 132,798 miles. An OBD2 scan revealed fault code P26AE — Engine Coolant Bypass Valve 'B' Control Circuit High. This is a known widespread defect affecting 2018-2022 Toyota Camry, RAV4, and Corolla vehicles equipped with the 2.5L Dynamic Force engine. The plastic valve casing is prone to cracking, allowing coolant to seep into the electrical connector and corrode the pins, triggering the fault. Toyota has acknowledged this issue through a Customer Support Program offering free replacement on qualifying vehicles, however many owners are still being quoted $900-$1,300 at dealerships. The faulty valve affects the engine coolant flow control system and transmission cooling circuit. Warning light appeared suddenly after a routine fuel fill. Vehicle has not yet been inspected by dealer. Component is available for inspection upon request."

I purchased my Camry in October. When starting it up in the morning for the past few weeks there was a slight hesitation. I attributed the issue to the cold temperatures and allowed the car to warm up before driving. Yesterday afternoon my car wouldn't start at all. It makes a clicking and rattling noise similar to an old clunker. I was parked in the parking lot of my apartment complex. I called the brown's Toyota dealership where I purchased the vehicle and was told to contact roadside assistance to have the car towed there. They were closing at 4P and would not be able to check out the car until Monday. They also informed me that I would have to pay for a loaner car upfront and be reimbursed if it was determined that I didn't cause the car not to start. So ridiculous. I shouldn't have this issue with a brand new car. From the looks of it reading through these other reports there's a serious issue with the 2020 Toyota Camry.

Incident: Just driving along when all of a sudden, the car engine turned off and check engine light came on along with warnings about brake system failures, fuels system failures and message to contact your dealer. Any attempts to restart the car failed. The vehicle was a 2020 toyota camry xse with 75000 miles. The vehicle was inoperable. CAUSE: There is a small air intake resonator box that connects to the air flow between the air filter compartment and the throttle. This resonator is made of plastic and the part that connects to the airflow main tube, had cracked and broken off and the broken piece got stuck in the throttle causing the vehicle to become disabled. This part is never touched when performing air filter maintenance and it was determined that over time, it just cracked and eventually broke off. This is a defect in the design and if this had happened at highway speeds could have had serious consequences.

Called roadside assistance they told me to hold the key fab to the start button and try to start the car. Which did not start. They were going to send a tow truck to give me a jump. My car started fine with the jump. I took my ar to wolf chase Toyota. They told me they would look at my car which they did not after beginning there over 6 hrs did not offer me a loaner vehicle. I took my car to auto zone had them check my battery no issues found also had the battery in key fab checked. About 2 weeks later the same thing happened again. I got a jump again everything was ok. My car is with chuck hutto Toyota now they are trying to see what the problem is with my they did provide me with a loaner car. Also checking for power decease when I try to accelerate .

Battery was replaced 6 months ago due to being old, however, on Sept 19,2024 the car was completely dead after 4 days of no driving. Jumped by AAA and taken to dealer. Dealer reported on Sept 20 no issue with battery and no idea what could be draining th battery. Told me I don’t drive it enough even though I just came back from a high mileage vacation and drove it for over 1 hour each way four days prior and two days before that. Told me I need to run for 30 min every other day even if it is just keep it idle in garage. Prior to this battery change I had no such issue letting it sit for days and not start. There seems to be an issue with this year of Camry that is going unaddressed by Toyota and needs a remedy other than drive your car more often as well as being told to buy a maintainer/charger to keep battery charged as told by the tech. This is a widespread problem that needs to be fixed or made right by the company especially when car is under warranty.

My 2020 Camry has been nothing but a problem and Toyota is noncompliant with helping me. The service recall for the fuel pump was fixed at Vaughn Toyota in Bastrop La .. a week later I still had the same issues. They refused to put another fuel pump on my car even thought the fuel pump had a one year warranty. I then took it to Landers in Little Rock and since I had “codes” I had to pay $180 diagnostic fee. Fast forward to now, still have the same crappy fuel pump. I took it to Ryburn Toyota and was told to replace the charcoal canister and vent valve . That was $1000. Problem not fixed. All my lights stay on, I often get a charging system error notification. It goes into reduced power mode. And has left me stranded numerous times on the side of the road. I want whatever is wrong with my car fixed. I have never owned a vehicle with this many problems. I thought Toyota’s were good vehicles but I promise if I ever get rid of this one, I will not purchase another Toyota vehicle again.

Problems with the dead battery ' draining. I bought the car in July 2020. It has been 2 times I've had to call roadside assistance because my car was completely dead. First time, they said it was because the car was parked at the dealership with no use. Second time, they said it was because my car has low miles since I've bought it. I wanted to buy a new car to not go through "issues" and I should not be forced to drive my car more than what I need to, nor I should have to buy a trickle Charger the tech service guy recommended me to buy and follow his instructions on having to drive at least 30 minutes twice a week, when I already drive it to work everyday. Now I am affraid to drive my car, worried that it won't work at any given moment. What should you expect when they tell you "I cannot garantee this won't happend again in 6 or 7 months"?. Very disappointed. I then, started doing resaerch on my own online and found out that there are a lot of people experiencing the same problem.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 9, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — NHTSA complaint #11766564

While fixing another problem, I pulled the codes from the ECM and found several P0087 (low fuel rail pressure). The problem was apparently intermittent and if the engine service light came on, it was transient and the light cleared. So neither my wife or I noticed an engine service light. I did some research and found that Denso found and reported a problem with the in tank fuel pump design to the NTSB in Feb. of 2020. We purchased the Camry in Dec. 2019 which meant we had the defective fuel pump. I ordered a new Denso fuel pump and install it and no new codes have appeared in the ECM log. Apparently Toyota has been slowly adding more years to the recall, but hasn't yet added the 2020 model year. This is a problem since a number of people have reported engine stalls due to the defective fuel pump. We live in the mountains, that might have been very dangerous especially if my wife suddenly lost power brakes and steering on a mountain road. Why hasn't a recall been ordered for this pump on all effected years?

First time went to get in my vehicle and the car would not even open, not even the trunk. Had been parked over night. The car was deader than a door nail. The Toyota dealer had a tow truck dispatched to me with a charge box. The charge box would not even crank the vehicle. Had to use his tow truck to jump the car took to Toyota they said it needed a software update. Did it seemed fine now fast forward several months later now when it cranks doesn’t want to crank, dies then have to try again finally it crank. Took in today at dealer they tested battery said it’s showing 100% testing so not the battery then they say the update didn’t take back months ago so needs to be updated again . So now I’ve been shuttled home as it will take 2 plus hours. I’ve googled and seen so many complaints that are identical to mine and wondering why my vehicle has no recall when my vehicle has same issues apparently or I’m being lied to by the dealer cause I’ve got a complete lemon. I’ve owned many Toyota’s and never once had issues like this.

I am filing a formal complaint regarding a longstanding and unresolved recall on my 2020 Toyota Camry XSE. The recall in question — NHTSA #23V865 / Toyota #23TB15 — was issued on December 19, 2023, and involves a critical defect: the passenger airbag may fail to deploy in a crash. As of today, nearly six months later, no remedy has been issued by Toyota. This puts myself and others at serious risk, and Toyota has made no accommodations to ensure my safety, such as a loaner vehicle. In addition, I am continuing to make payments on this vehicle through Toyota Financial Services, despite being unable to use it safely or as intended. I urge NHTSA to take immediate action to: •Investigate the reason for the extended delay in remedy •Pressure Toyota to offer protective measures or replacement vehicles •Ensure that automakers are held accountable when they fail to resolve serious recalls in a reasonable timeframe I expect a response or update from NHTSA and Toyota regarding the status of this recall and the lack of consumer support.

The next day it did it again so i took it back to them while the condition was happening. Which insisted of the error message, serv eng light, gearshift indicator displaying drive and park at the same time. Also the door locks were continually locking and unlocking. They put a new water valve plus a neut switch assy and a new xmission lever in it and told me it was fixed. I picked it up and the next day it did it again. While driving the Camry at 45 mph among the flow of traffic on a state highway in Florida, out of the blue the vehicle's speedometer on the instrument cluster was replaced with a flashing red box and the brakes applied themselves fully with no command or input given whatsoever. The Camry immediately screeched to a stop in the middle of the road within a couple seconds, causing the vehicle behind me to slam into the Camry at full speed. There were no other vehicles or obstacles ahead of me at all, this fact was also observed by witnesses. The automation had triggered for no apparent reason, overriding my control of the Camry and stopping it in the middle of a major highway, causing the accident. Despite the intensity of the crash, the air bags of the vehicle failed to deploy in the impact, worsening the severity of my injuries. Both the Camry and the other motorist's car were rendered inoperable and totaled in the accident, they had to be towed from the scene. The police ruled the cause of the accident to be vehicular malfunction of the Camry.

2020 Toyota Camry LE dead battery problems. Since I purchased the car on April 25 2020 I have had to purchase two new Toyota batteries from Toyota. The new batteries are 770 cca amps vs my oriinal battery which was only 563 ccawhich they do not make any more.yesterday I spoke with julie a customer care mananger fr. Om Toyota customer care and she said Toyota is getting alot of compaints about dead batteries from customers.when I asked her to do something about my spending over 300.OO dollars on two batteries because nowhere in their 608 page Toyota Camry manual does it tell you you have to close the windows and lock the doors or the battery will go dead. In fact my wife had asked the service manager at parks Toyota in deland Florida this exact question and he david carey saidy ou do not have to close windows or lock your doors.i have gone to the Toyota dealership 4 times spent over 300.00 dollars on 2 new batteriesand 250.00 on the correct test equipment to confirm the electrical problem of dead batteries was from the fact that I parked my car in my garage with the windows open and doors unlocked

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 9, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — NHTSA complaint #11663782

The contact owned a 2020 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that his wife was driving at 60 MPH, when another vehicle struck the rear driver's side, causing the vehicle to spin and crash into a semi-truck's trailer. The contact stated that the tires had caved in as a result of the collision. The air bags did not deploy. The contact's wife's head struck the steering wheel and the front driver's side window. The contact's wife suffered cuts, bruises, and bumps on her forehead, hands, and arms. The contact's parents were also present in the vehicle. The contact's father suffered head, hand, and wrist injuries, while the contact's mother suffered six broken ribs and two broken hands. The contact's wife and parents were transported to the hospital via ambulance. The vehicle was towed to the tow yard and was deemed totaled by the insurance company. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and after reviewing the crash report data, the contact was informed that the air bag system was operating properly, and the criteria were not met for the air bags to deploy. The failure mileage was approximately 35,000.

Transmission failed on a major parkway. A loud noise was heard and engine over-revved. Car started to vibrate and no forward gears worked. I had to drift across two lanes of a coming high speed traffic with no drive power. I eventually got to the side of the road. I put my hazards in as soon as it happened. The vehicle was towed to the location from which it was purchased new in 2020, and serviced at all intervals. The dealership has changed ownership and is now Ourisman Toyota of Richmond. They ran a diagnostic and confirmed that the transmission has failed. There were no warning lamps, however the day prior I noticed the transmission shifting seemed off. I made an appointment to take the car in for checking at the earliest available date. However the failure occurred two days before this date.the car’s mileage is just under 85k. We purchased a 6yr 75k VSP warranty however it has expired by mileage. Car is still financed by Toyota financing. Problem has been reported to Toyota Brand engagement center and has been escalated. We have not received a resolution yet and the case is still in queue after 3 business days:

Found service bulletin TSB00007-19 growing number of customer concerns about needing a new battery after 1 year. I brought my 2020 Toyota Camry into daytona Toyota for diagnosis of dead battery issue-technician took 8 hours and suggested I must have left the door or trunk open. Technician did say I should have received a new battery which is a new design, part #00544H6074770.THIS battery is rated at 770CCA vs my battery which is rated at 560 cca. The new battery actually checks out at 990 cca! Technician said it is the newly designed battery for the Toyota Camry and RAV4 and would greatly reduce dead battery problem, however Toyota would not authorize a replacement. I have spent 2 full days chasing this problem at 2 dealerships and Toyota says it is my fault for leaving a door, hood, or trunk open-absurd! This is truly lousy service on a brand new vehicle with an underlying serious problem. For the immediate time I disconnect the battery cable when not going to use the care for 4 or 5 days. This vehicle needs a recall for battery or underlying drainage problem. Also see kelly blue book for many complaints about this.

Forward facing radar system malfunction. If vehicle is parked in the sun and windshield is hot the forward facing radar is overheated and when you start the vehicle the safety system fail to boot up. If this isn't enough of a safety concern the error messages obstruct your instrument cluster screen so you can not see important things like your speedometer. You can cancel the warning but with in a few seconds it reappears and obstructs your view. Vehicle was taken to dealership. There are no recalls or safety bulletins on it from Toyota corp and no known fix. This problem did not exist until Toyota moved forward radar from grill area and placed it inside windshield top center. If I manually cool the area with cold water or prolonged fan blowing on the area I can restart and safety system boots up fine. This continually happens over several years, and yet still no recall. Several discussions on toyota's forum about this exact issue. Yet neither Toyota or NHTSA are addressing it. Lets recall and fix this before someone dies as a result of the safety system malfunction or the warning message obstructing the instrument cluster.

I tried different things windows up windows down, recuperate open and close and detector alarmed. I brought my car to Doggett Toyota they found a leak in engine that was running to exhaust. I paid for $117 for estimate and $337 for part. The service department is pressing me to let them use my carbon monoxide detector. I refuse. When I went pick up the car fumes plus soap smell is still in the car. Detector still alarm 229ppm.They only offer to rent a ccar which I cannot drive because of health reasons. Other 2020 are carmys are recalled because oil leak and possibly damage to engine block. I requested my car be examined for the same problems as recall. The service department says I need ask corporate to send there own mechanic and I pay for it. Hours of run around miscommunication. That car is not safe to drive. Dealership doesn't have carbon monoxide detector or means to detect the smoke in the cabin. Service members all over the place, texting on cell phone, walking away while on phone with corporate etc.

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 9, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — NHTSA complaint #11709566

My 2020 Toyota Camry is experiencing a premature and progressive transmission failure that creates serious safety risks. Symptoms include hesitation and loss of power during acceleration, harsh and delayed shifting, RPMs increasing without vehicle movement, failure to properly engage gears (including reverse), and loud whining/grinding noises. These issues make the vehicle unsafe to drive, especially when merging, crossing intersections, or accelerating from a stop. Toyota and the dealership have confirmed the transmission is failing, yet Toyota has stated that no new or used replacement transmission is available and no repair timeline exists. The vehicle was returned to me despite being unsafe. Toyota has provided no transportation assistance, no repair ETA, and no remedy, leaving me with an undrivable vehicle and ongoing financial obligations. I am aware of numerous similar consumer complaints and ongoing litigation involving Toyota’s 8-speed automatic transmissions exhibiting the same symptoms. This appears to be a systemic defect that poses a safety risk to drivers and the public. I am requesting NHTSA review and investigation.

My 2020 Toyota Camry is experiencing a persistent failure with the Data Communication Module (DCM), resulting in **Error Code ** in the Toyota app: "Request could not be completed. Please contact your dealer for assistance." This error prevents all Toyota Remote Connect features from functioning, including remote start, lock/unlock, and vehicle status — services I am actively paying a subscription fee for. Toyota has acknowledged this is a known software defect and published Technical Service Bulletin TSB-0089-21 (DCM Reset and Firmware Update – LG), which specifically lists the 2020 Camry as an affected vehicle. Despite this being a documented manufacturer defect, Toyota has not issued a formal Special Service Campaign (SSC) to cover all affected owners regardless of warranty status, leaving out-of-warranty customers responsible for repair costs caused by Toyota's own firmware failure. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this issue and urge Toyota to issue a no-cost Special Service Campaign for all affected 2020–2021 Camry owners experiencing Error 42 / DCM failure. This is a safety concern as Safety Connect (SOS/emergency services) is also rendered inoperative when the DCM fails.

Description of the Problem: On May 19, 2025, the steering wheel intermediate shaft or column of my 2020 Toyota Camry LE Hybrid began to malfunction. The steering became unexpectedly hard and stuck, significantly affecting my ability to safely control the vehicle. This problem occurs intermittently but poses a serious safety risk as it can happen while the vehicle is in motion, especially during turns or lane changes. •The affected component is the steering column/intermediate shaft, and it is available for inspection upon request. •This malfunction put my safety and the safety of others at risk, as it limited my ability to steer accurately and could potentially result in a collision, especially in emergency or high-speed situations. •At this time, the issue has not yet been reproduced or confirmed by a Toyota dealership or an independent service center, but I am in the process of scheduling an inspection. •The vehicle has not yet been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance, or other parties, but I am prepared to provide access to the vehicle for a thorough inspection. •There were no warning lamps, error messages, or advance symptoms before the failure. The issue appeared suddenly on May 19, 2025, without any prior signs or indicators.

The panoramic sunroof on my 2020 Toyota Camry XSE failed to close on two separate occasions. The most recent incident occurred about three months ago. After opening the sunroof, the glass panel would not close, leaving the vehicle fully exposed during heavy rain. I had to cover the opening with plastic and tape while standing in the rain, which caused water to enter the vehicle and led to illness from exposure. This failure poses safety risks, including: Driver distraction if the failure occurs while driving. Possible water damage to electrical components, potentially affecting vehicle operation. Reduced visibility in heavy rain. Security risks if the vehicle cannot be secured. Online research and discussions with other owners revealed that this problem appears to be relatively common with Toyota Camry models equipped with a panoramic roof. My initial repair estimate was approximately $12,000, which is unreasonable given the vehicle’s value. I ultimately had the sunroof permanently sealed shut at my own expense. I have video evidence and documentation from both incidents, including an earlier occurrence on August 29, 2020, which was reported to a Toyota dealer but dismissed at the time. I believe this should be investigated as a potential recall.

The contact owns a 2020 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, the front end of the vehicle made abnormal exploding sounds and there was smoke coming from under the hood. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the battery had exploded, and the battery was replaced. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the message "Pre-collision Warning Malfunction” was intermittently displayed. Additionally, the contact stated that while driving on another occasion, the message "Maintenance Required" and messages indicating the Pre-collision, Anti-Lock and ABS malfunction, and to contact the nearest dealer were displayed. The contact also stated that an alarm persistently sounded. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was determined that the failure was due to rodents damaging electrical wires. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for a second opinion, and the mechanic determined that the failure was caused by the acidic residues that remained in the hood after the battery explosion. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer to be repaired. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 74,480.

Unexpectedly, my car's 12V battery discharged completely under conditions of regular use and moderate temperatures, while parked in my garage overnight. Car is 11 months old with 6327 miles. It was towed to Toyota repair shop, which re-charged the battery and installed dcm reset and firmware update T-SB-0095-20. The repair representative referred to possible problem with a recent auto software update that May have worn down battery with numerous incomplete (uninitiated) ignition starts. This software fix was applied for this specific instance, but is not being generally applied to all vehicles. The representative said that the problem was not caused by anything I did, and indicated I May want to watch for Toyota consumer notices for further repair. The Toyota technical service bulletin, dcm reset and firmware update T-SB-0095-20 (dated September 30, 2020, accessible online), indicates some 2020-2021 models May exhibit "depleted 12V vehicle battery when in ig-off". The software update is not being applied to all vehicles, and there was no assurance that the problem is fixed and will not occur again. As a driver, this leaves me vulnerable to being stranded without transportation, and reliant on help from strangers if parked in remote recreation areas without cell phone access; an unsafe situation.

So a few months after installing the pedal commander chip my Camry out of nowhere began flashing warning symbols and messages and the engine was reduced to about 5% power. Pre-collision braking was down, ABS was down, lane assistance was down, cruise control was down and it also said “Engine Reduced Power”, please see dealership! So I parked, turned off the car and disconnected the battery for about 10-15 mins. When I reconnected the battery and started the car everything was fine and there were no codes/warning lights. So I thought it was a glitch. Then like 3-4 days later it did it again immobilizing me outside of a clients house to where I had to get it towed. I then thought to unplug the chip and see if that did anything and of course once I did it started up and drove fine with no codes, for about a month or so. Then it gave me all the same codes as before but now without the chip installed. Did an oil change with new filter, replaced the starter cause now it wouldn’t start at all or turn over. Once I replaced the starter, I was able to get it started and drive it a few times over the course of 3-4 weeks at the time I wasn’t driving it that much. But then all of a sudden it stops starting again and now gives me all those codes again and now my Camry has been immobilized for the past year, basically all cause of the accelerator chip.

Would not start, 25,000 . Hybrid malfunction warning, ocs warming, pre-collision warning, brake system warning. Dealer claimed software update issue. Had to be towed, late to work urgent care/covid, uber to dealer to get loaner, upset. Friday it happened again and I had surgery scheduled. Hybrid malfunction warning pre-collision warning, do not drive, call dealer, tow truck tested battery and it was good. Lights, bells, stereo worked, held key fob to push start no. 40,000 car and dealer today said, oh, we put in a new battery? In a new car? And for it to not start due to software update???? I go 100 out of city with dogs, no cell and would have been stranded in a brand new car due to no notification of hey there are problems, your car wont start, software update? Anything? Second time 6 weeks later, missed my surgery appt!!!!!!!! Tow it again, they now say that Toyota has fixed on 2021 and dealer had list of vehicles with issues by VIN. Great. Why not tell me. One more lemon law wisconsin. I don't even want to go pick it up. Its going to happen again. I think it is electrical, starter, Hybrid. Byw why not replace Hybrid battery? Because they are too expensive. There are recalls for 2020 complete engines. I want it gone. It was parked in my driveway would not start at critical times. I am filing this complaint to report a serious and ongoing issue regarding the unresolved safety recall 23TA15 (Interim Notice 23TB15) for my vehicle, a 2020 Toyota Camry LE (VIN: [XXX] ). The recall is associated with a critical defect where the passenger airbag may fail to deploy (NHTSA #23V865). It has been over 1 year since this recall was issued, and despite repeated visits to Toyota dealerships, I have been informed each time that the required remedy is not yet available. This delay is unacceptable, particularly for a defect that directly compromises the safety of vehicle occupants. The inability of the passenger airbag to deploy in an accident poses a significant risk of severe injury or death. As the owner of this vehicle, I am extremely concerned that Toyota has not prioritized this issue or provided an adequate solution within a reasonable timeframe. I respectfully request the NHTSA to investigate this matter and take the necessary actions to ensure Toyota fulfills its responsibility to provide a timely and effective remedy for this critical safety recall. I would also appreciate guidance on any additional steps I can take as a consumer to expedite the resolution of this issue. Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I am available to provide any further information or documentation required. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

My car has been brought into the shop over two times due to a recall that has no yet been resolved and has no time frame as to when there will be available parts created to fix this issue. The passenger air bag is in for a recall as in case of anything, the air bag will not deploy correctly or at all. This is a major safety issue as it can cause the death of the person rising in the passenger seat. I do not feel safe driving in this car especially since my car is always a full house and it is used as a family vehicle where all 5 seats are being used at once. This is a recall that was later found on this car meaning that the car was built like that. Again, I do not feel safe as I have had family members die in a car accident before. I have asked the dealership multiple times to resolve this issue. On June 23rd 20024, I was almost in a car accident. All 5 seats were being used and we were almost hit by a car that was going over approximately 85mph. A life could have been taken if we would have been hit and the air bag would not have deployed at all or correctly. My car has been in the shop, Hanlees Hilltop Toyota since Monday June 24th. I was concerned about the airbag and again, they do not have any parts that have been created by TOYOTA manufacturer. I asked for a loaner car and they did not want to help nor provide me with one. I do not feel safe in this vehicle and the airbag not working should be considered high risk and this car should not be drivable due to this major high risk issue.

Brake system failure

SERVICE BRAKES

2 months

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 8, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — NHTSA complaint #11342787

I already have a complaint number 11342422. I have studied the anti-lock braking system further and I think I have identified 2 places of safety concern. In normal mode, since I can push the pedal all the way to the floor, my interpretation is that the reservoir can accept all of the additional fluid being pumped. It also tells me that the final force on the brake pads will be whatever the resistance the spring in the reservoir has. So I don't have final control over the braking even under normal conditions. The other condition that concerns me is the last diagram when the pump is intensifying the braking force. Now there is also another path for some of this pumped fluid to return to the input side of the pump. If the leakage path had no resistance then the pump could be recirculating all of the brake fluid resulting in no braking. I hope that the leakage path has enough resistance that a sufficient amount of brake fluid is ending up at the brake pads. This is something that is impacting my car but I think it's a risk to all cars with ABS. What really bothers me is that I have talked to service managers of 3 car dealers and they all claim that being able to push the brake pedal all the way to the floor is normal. I don't think it is normal and it also doesn't apply to all cars. My wife's car brakes don't do this. It seems as if there is an industry wide Focus to cover up this problem. I hope that you can get access to ABS engineers to really understand this issue. Thank you.

I purchased my vehicle from a certified used car dealership in Connecticut in 2020 with a little over 1800 miles. Since purchasing the vehicle, it has been very reluctant to down shift and had slight transmission whine. I was notified of a recall for I believe the TCM a few months after purchasing it, which i had remedied by the dealership. Over the years, my car has been maintained completely to Toyotas manufacturer standard. Around 50,000 miles i started experiencing shuddering during shifts and slipping during shifts and a louder whine Around 89,000 miles my transmission symptoms worsened. Sporadic shifting, obvious whine, grinding and clunking during shifts and shifting between gears, and clicking from a stop. At 97k i serviced the transmission fluid which seemed to help a little bit but did not get rid of the symptoms fully. The fluid was dark brown, which was serviced 3,000 miles before Toyotas recommended interval. I then replaced the driver side cv axle shaft which also did not remedy any symptoms and i was notified by my shop that it was premature transmission failure. Now at 100,998 miles, my transmission grinds and clunks during all lower gear shifts, will shift through gears while maintaining steady speed, and whines audibly from the exterior and interior. My car is still running and driving for now, but after research this is a very common issue with the UA80E transmission and Toyota has knowingly sold these cars with these production errors putting people at risk of injury and financial nightmares.

Front bumper and side view mirror cover (passenger side) have been badly deformed with in past few months and getting worse for a vehicle which is still under warranty (~2 year old and under 36,000 miles). Side view mirror cover (driver side) has also started to deform. Side view mirror cover (passenger side) has been deformed to an extent that a slight hand touch or push detaches it from the vehicle body which means it can become falling or flying object when vehicle is in motion and cause safety hazard. Parts are available for inspection (pictures are also attached). I claimed the manufacturer warranty through a local Toyota dealership and after sending me from one dealership to another, my warranty claim was denied based on the reason that deformation is possibly due to heat reflection which is an outside influence. Other than taking pictures, dealership and manufacturer have not tried to replicate the failure of parts. Dealership & Manufacturer have also failed to rule out any safety issues due to deformed components. As a Toyota customer and vehicle owner, I am highly concerned about (1) If front bumper will function under deformed conditions as it is designed to function and will not cause any safety issues to the vehicle and its occupants (2) Deformed components (One of side view mirror is already started to detach) will not completely detach and become safety hazard. I am requesting NHTSA to investigate this matter which looks like a product failure and should be covered under manufacturer warranty or recall.

The day was partly cloudy. The location was maryland. The vehicle was a new 2020 Toyota Camry SE 4DOOR. While driving with my sunroof exterior flat glass and interior door assembly both completely closed, my daughter and I suddenly heard a boom explosion. While driving trying to safely exit, huge black chunks were flying behind us, that was later identified as broken sunroof glass flying behind us hitting the vehicles traveling behind us. We pulled over and got out of the car. We discovered that my vehicle's sunroof had exploded. Instead of the remaining broken sunroof glass edges exhibiting a concave downward appearance, the remaining shattered glass exhibited a convex outward appearance indicating an explosion had occurred. Took the vehicle to a local maryland Toyota dealer for help and was told because the vehicle wasn't purchased from their dealership they couldn't help me. Hence the OEM glass replacement costs were covered by my auto insurance, with a $500 deductible. A few days later after I returning home, the new OEM glass and sunroof assembly began to screech and crackled as if it was coming apart. The Toyota dealership where I purchased my vehicle renigged on their promise to make my sunroof assembly new again at no costs since the vehicle was still under warranty. Now I deal with a crackling and squeaking sunroof assembly that makes me fearful of the sunroof exploding again. Note: the purchasing dealership failed to comply with my auto sunroof glass and assembly that was still under warranty and refund my auto insurer and me as they had promised. Government / agencyIndexed Oct 8, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — NHTSA complaint #11431978

I purchased this vehicle on 01/12/2021 from Toyota of Greenville, SC. I was initially told that the vehicle was a Certified Pre-Owned Toyota, which means it went through an intensive reconditioning process and passed all certification requirements. As I was signing the papers to purchase the car, I was told that it could not be sold as a Certified vehicle because it has the open manufacturer recall #20TA02. It has been almost 9 months and I have not received any notice of a pending fix for this potentially deadly recall, summarized below. SUMMARY: The subject vehicles are equipped with a low-pressure fuel pump which may stop operating. If this were to occur, warning lights and messages may be displayed on the instrument panel, and the engine may run rough. This may result in a vehicle stall, and the vehicle may be unable to be restarted. SAFETY RISK: If a vehicle stall occurs while driving at higher speeds, this could increase the risk of a crash. REMEDY: Any authorized Toyota dealer will replace the low-pressure fuel pump with an improved one FREE OF CHARGE. I am hesitant to take the vehicle on a long trip or take it on the highway. I do not want to be stranded during my trip or die if the fuel pump shuts off at high speed. I have been purchasing Toyota products since 2000. I am feeling very abused and and neglected buy what I thought was a safe and reliable brand. I will be in the market for another vehicle soon. Now, I am not sure Toyota is the only brand to consider. Please let them know that I am not a happy customer because of this ongoing problem with their Number 1 Selling vehicle. Airbag / restraint failure

AIR BAGS

56 months

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 8, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — NHTSA complaint #11642558

Toyota’s Occupant Classification Sensor (OCS) recall, which prevents airbags from deploying in a crash, was announced in November 2023. Despite multiple calls over the past year, Toyota has failed to resolve the issue, repeatedly giving me the runaround—both over the phone and in person at the dealership. This is completely unacceptable. My previous Camry had an airbag recall, which was fixed just before a serious accident caused by an unlicensed driver. Thankfully, the airbags deployed, likely preventing severe injury or worse. Now, I face the same dangerous issue again with this recall, and I refuse to put myself or my son at risk by driving a vehicle with defective airbags. After finally escalating the issue to Toyota corporate, they offered me a loaner vehicle. However, after spending an entire day coordinating and traveling to pick it up, the dealership treated me terribly, refusing to provide a comparable vehicle with basic features like Apple CarPlay for GPS. The staff was rude and unprofessional, making me extremely uncomfortable leaving my car there for an estimated four months—the earliest they claim they can fix it. This is my primary vehicle—our only car for long trips and daily use. I have an older car for short errands, but this is not a viable alternative. To make matters worse, when I reported the terrible experience back to Toyota corporate, they had no solutions, and will not offer rental car reimbursement. This is negligence, plain and simple. This is the second time in the past 10-15 years Toyota has faced a major airbag recall, with at least 28 fatalities and a $70+ million settlement tied to past failures. How is Toyota being allowed to do this again? They must be held accountable.

Camera / Radar component - yes Camera / Radar unit is available When it failed, the dash lit up with lots of errors: engine check light, anti-skid failure light (even though the system was turned off), rotating errors included: secondary brake system malfunction, pre-collission system malfunction, LDA system malfunction, check engine. I was driving up a 6% hill on a four lane road at 65 MPH with the cruise control active. Was in the left lane passing two slower trucks when the engine just seem to die and the dash lit up with lots of errors. By the time I was able to get to the right lane and off the freeway, I was doing less than 20 MPH. It turns out that when the radar / camera unit failed, the computer put copious confusing errors and put the engine in limp mode. Very dangerous and I'm lucky there wasn't more traffic. When the computer detected the failure should have automatically disabled the cruise control and put out an error message saying it was now disabled. The other junk errors just confused everything. The computer definitely should not have put the engine in limp mode. It was only after I pulled over and had time to digest the errors that I actually figured out what had happened and how to handle the situation. After I pulled off, the center display which had been saying there was a message that would display after I was safely stopped, now had an message indicating I should turn off the cruise control. Problem was I could not determine if the cruise control was active or not because the indicator was blocked by errors, however the engine was still definitely in limp mode. I finally turned the engine off and back on to make sure the cruise control was off. All the rotating errors and error lights were still on, but the engine was now out of limp mode and the car was again drivable.

My 2020 Toyota Camry SE suffered a sudden and premature transmission failure at only 114,000 miles. I am a college student and I cannot afford a major repair like this on top of my monthly car payment. The car began showing hesitation and sluggish acceleration on cold starts for a few months, but then suddenly went into limp mode with the Check Engine and Traction Control lights on. The screen displayed a warning saying ‘Malfunction in the electronic control of the engine/throttle/transmission.’ The vehicle became unsafe to drive because it would barely accelerate. If this had happened while I was merging onto a highway, it could have caused an accident. Lakeland Toyota told me the transmission has ‘internal failure’ and quoted me over $8,000 for a replacement. They did not provide detailed diagnostic codes or open the transmission to confirm the mechanical failure — they just saw a code and declared it dead. As a student with limited income, this puts me in a terrible financial situation. I still owe monthly payments on this car and now cannot even drive it. After researching online, I learned that MANY 2018–2020 Camry owners are experiencing similar transmission problems (UA80/UA80E), including hesitation, shuddering, harsh shifting, and early failure. Some owners have reported full transmission failure under 100k miles. There is even a public petition documenting these issues. This appears to be a PATTERN, not an isolated case. A transmission should NOT fail this early on a Toyota, and this sudden loss of power poses a serious safety risk. The vehicle is currently at a transmission specialist for a second opinion, but this may become a widespread issue affecting thousands of Camry owners. I am asking NHTSA to investigate the 2018–2020 Camry transmission problems before more drivers experience unexpected failures in traffic

I purchase a brand new 2020 Toyota Camry March 2020. On June 15, 2020 my vehicle was parked in my driveway and wouldn't start and had to be towed to the dealership. The doors would not lock and my dashboard displayed a malfunctioning system parking brake disabled. My car remain at the dealership for 4 days. On June 19 I picked up my vehicle. The Toyota technician stated the battery was good after performing a battery test using Toyota DCA8000 test. The technician performed an update telematics module I9I-13 dcm to latest firmware to software version high at LG-N010FFB and software version low at CBC-98 or CBC-34 as applicable dealer techstream diagnostic tool. Ok this was suppose to be the fix to my problem. On Aug 19 the same issue happened again. Again I had my car towed to the same dealership. After a series of test they stated it was the battery, so they replaced the battery with a new battery. I didn't understand how it could be the battery when this is a brand new car with less than 12,000 miles on the vehicle. . On Jan 25, 2021 my vehicle was parked in my driveway and my car would start. The radio came on , the lights were working but the car wouldn't start, the steering wheel wouldn't move and the car wouldn't go into neutral. I had my car towed to my dealership again. Technician advise the next day had perform a dcm reset and firmware update for draining batteries to the 2020 Camry. This vehicle has not perform to the standards I expected since day of purchase March 2020. State of Georgia will not allow you to submit a lemon law claim because vehicle was not out of commission for 30 days total. I am a very upset customer and will continue to file complaints with Toyota headquarters and possibly seek me a a consumer attorney. As much as I am paying for my vehicle I shouldn't have to continue to wait around for Toyota to get this problem correct.

I have owned 5 Toyotas and a Lexus SUV and never had so many problems. This is a 2020 Camry Hybrid with only 20492 miles on it. It has had to be jump-started 3-4 times so far, but now it has a new issue: While on a road trip with my wife thru Utah, the car suddenly shuts down, bells ringing and messages appearing. Cruise control, Lane departure, and Headlight System Failure. This happened on a 2-lane highway with very minimal shoulder. I pulled over as far as I could, but still slightly in the lane. Turned off the ignition and after a minute or so, was able to restart the car. Noted that the sign on the road said "Next Services 129 Miles"! This was on July 11, 2022 at about 3 PM. Once car was restarted, we drove to our destination without further issues, however I would not use Cruise control for fear it would happen again. Got back to California the next day and took it to dealer to investigate the cause. Their conclusion: "Extreme heat caused the warning lights to come on, but history code indicates that the issue resolved itself. The vehicle is operating normally at this time but the system will be affected by high temperatures and direct sunlight"!!! The temperature on the road at the time was 95 degrees. Dealer contacted Toyota's technical assistance hot line to document concern Case #221930394. Per the service department, they called the field rep who said if everything was functioning at this time, then there was no action to be taken. First of all, I am 75 years old and do not expect this from a car with only 20492 miles on it, and especially not from a Toyota. I find the "solution" to be completely foolish - avoid high temperatures and direct sunlight!! Temperatures over 95 degrees and direct sunlight are common in many states. Can someone please get to the bottom of this? I am beginning to think that I bought a lemon. I am also reporting it to NHTSA, as it is a safety issue that must be dealt with. Thank you,

Incident Highway Malfunction Occurs – [XXX] While driving at a steady speed on the highway, my 2020 Toyota Camry unexpectedly shifted gears on its own. I did not bump the gear shifter or interact with the controls in any abnormal way. The gear shift occurred without warning or driver input, while the vehicle was in motion. A “Drive Start Control Malfunction” warning appeared on the dashboard at the time of the incident. Vehicle Towed to Toyota Service Center – July 11 2025 Following the incident, I brought the car to a Toyota dealership for diagnosis and repair. I spoke with a service advisor named Rebecca, explained the situation, and clearly stated that I did not hit or touch the gear. The vehicle was kept for inspection, repair and I communicatied with Toyota. Vehicle Picked Up – July 16, 2025 I picked up my car from the Toyota dealership on Wednesday, July 16, 2025. I had not yet heard back from Toyota about coverage or resolution. I chose to wait for further communication regarding whether they would take responsibility for the malfunction. Toyota Corporate Follow-Up Call – July 23, 2025 On Tuesday, July 23, 2025, Toyota corporate called to inform me that the repair would not be covered, citing that the vehicle is out of warranty. What disturbed me most was that the representative claimed I had told Rebecca that I might have “bumped the gear,” which is completely false. I made it clear from the beginning that I never touched the gear shifter, and that the malfunction occurred while I was driving normally. This false statement was either a miscommunication or a lie — and it minimizes the seriousness of a potential safety defect. Response to Toyota’s Misrepresentation – July 23, 2025 During the call, I told Toyota that misrepresenting my account was unacceptable and dangerous. If Toyota is aware that this vehicle model may experience uncommanded gear changes while in motion and fails to report. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA

2020 Toyota Camry XSE, VIN [XXX], 2.5L 4-cylinder A25A-FKS engine, built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK) during the production window covered by NHTSA Recall 20V-064 (Toyota campaign 20TA04), which addresses porosity in engine castings that can cause internal and external coolant leaks, engine overheating, and possible engine failure. Toyota’s VIN lookup returns this vehicle as not affected by the campaign, but the failure pattern matches the recall defect exactly. Timeline of failures and repair attempts: XXX, at approximately 92,832 miles, Camelback Toyota in Phoenix, AZ (RO XXX). Check engine light active. Diagnosed DTC P268115 (Engine Coolant Bypass Valve Circuit, Short to Battery or Open). Battery also failed load test. Overheating symptom noted on the same repair order. Coolant bypass valve replacement recommended. Following that visit, water pump and thermostat were replaced at Berge Toyota (Mesa/Gilbert, AZ area). Camelback Toyota stated the vehicle was fixed. Vehicle overheated again the next day after being returned as repaired. XXX, at 93,034 miles, Camelback Toyota (RO XXX). Oil and filter change performed under good faith goodwill service, transmission fluid exchange completed. Overheating condition persisted. Vehicle continued to overheat through the summer and into September 2026. Current dealer now recommends head gasket replacement and states that if the head gasket does not resolve the overheating, the engine block is cracked and the engine will need replacement. Dealer describes the engine as “sucking air,” indicating combustion gases entering the cooling system and/or a compromised block-to-head seal. This failure sequence — persistent overheating, multiple failed repair attempts across two Toyota dealers, replacement of water pump, thermostat, and coolant bypass valve without resolution, and dealer conclusion pointing to a cracked engine block — matches the failure mode described in NHTSA Rec INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FR
