Source model text: KN-COSM-1B. Incident: Kidde Smoke Detector/Carbon Monoxide detector at fire station beeping every 60 seconds. Which normally means low battery. A new battery was installed device said push test button, the detector then sounded the fire alarm activation but did not cycle and test the CO Portion of the device. Also the green power light is showing that the device has A/C power when in fact it is sitting on my desk. As a Fire Marshal I have had similar issues with this style detector and would like to speak to someone.

Incident: Complainant purchased newly constructed home in October 2014 and in June 2015 his 8 hardwired smoke detectors started falsely activating during the night and day. He contacted Kidde customer support and they advised him to trouble shoot them by disconnecting them from the hard wire and running them on battery power. After conducting the test, he found that 2 out of the 8 units were defective. He contacted Kidde customer support again and they sent him 2 new detectors. He asked if he needed to send them back to be examined and they told him no and instructed him to throw them away.

Incident: We had seven Kidde talking smoke/carbon monoxide detectors (KN-COSM-IB) in our home (manufactured in November 2010), and none of the smoke detectors work. We had a small fire in the kitchen, and none of the detectors triggered or sounded the alarm. It seems that they were/are not working, but we have fresh batteries in them, and when you press the test/reset they beep. But they don't seem to detect smoke or carbon monoxide, and don't seem to work/function properly.

Source model text: 20SAR. Incident: I have a Kidde Model 20SAR smoke detector which has failed in the middle of the night. In the middle of the night while everyone was sleeping, it failed into full alarm mode and the interconnected system triggered all other alarms in the residence to go off. Then after 2 times, it stopped. Then it went full alarm mode again on and off for 30 minutes until it was disconnected and the batteries replaced. This is the third time this has happened with these model detectors. 2 months ago I already replaced another detector in the system because of this issue. These false alarms result in nuisance alarms and cause consumers to pull down the detectors

Incident: My wife noticed that there was a brown spot on the side of one of white smoke alarms on the ceiling. It looked like the plastic was starting to burn. I pulled the smoke alarm apart and found that a large resistor, labeled D7 on the circuit board, was where the heat was originating from. The green circuit board was black covering a couple square inches of circuit board around it. I then went and checked the other 13 smoke alarms in the house and 12 had similar brown spots on the exterior white plastic. One had just slightly discolored plastic (barely noticeable) and I opened it up too and found the circuit board also blackened around that same resistor, but in this case the resistor looked very different. It was a different brand, but similar size to the orignal one. I found that the build date of this smoke alarm was 4/30/2010 whereas the original one I had looked at had a build date was 5/5/2009.

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 28, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — SaferProducts.gov incident

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20130917-99144-2147451825. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: Kidde Smoke Alarm model P4010DCS-W and p4010DCSCO-W. Source model text: KN-COEG-3, P/N 900-0113. Incident: I bought a Kidde Gas and Carbon Monoxide Alarm about a year ago, after we had had a natural gas leak. The gas pipe outside broke, and the gas came into the house through the dryer vent. There are not a lot of Natural Gas Alarms out there. Kidde is a good brand, so I bought their alarm. Well, the gas pipe broke again recently, and the house filled with gas. Thankfully, I have a good gas-sniffing nose, because the alarm registered 0 and did not even chirp once the entire time the gas was in the house. I'm glad we were not out of town or sleeping. The alarm was properly installed, plugged in, it had a working backup battery, and the test I performed afterwards was successful (the alarm is actually quite loud when it works). I called Kidde and they sent me 2 more of the Gas and Carbon Monoxide Alarms. I asked how I can be sure that these alarms will work in the event of another gas leak. The answer was, "YOU CAN'T. YOU JUST HAVE TO RELY ON THE MONITOR. THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO WORK." I don't feel any safer with the alarms. I have no confidence that any of the Kidde gas alarms will function as they should in the event of a gas leak. The scary part is that we won't know if the alarm works until we have a gas leak. We could die in our sleep or blow up the house with the flick of a light switch. Kidde is selling a safety product that carries no assurance of working when needed.

We have three installed, and three back-ups. Twice in the past year we have had three rooms fill with smoke, and not once did any of the alarms sound. Once was from an [REDACTED] that was set-up on the range top. It was pushed back and bumped a burner knob causing the burner to turn on. The room were pretty full of black smoke from melted plastic. No alarm! The next time a small basket of some sort had ignited ( I beleive from a candle) again, smoke filled rooms, no alarm!

Not to mention how unbelievably dangerous to be so excessively loud that it's disorientating, if not very disorientating. Why are these fire/smoke/CO detector companies still being allowed to make detectors that sound off so loud they're disorientating and cause hearing damage?? This is an unbelievably stupid problem that's been allowed to go on far too long.

It is now late May and three out of the original six have failed, and now one of the replacements that Kidde sent has failed. The units will chirp three times, flash a red light, and announce "smoke sensor error". Following the directions in the user manual, and per the verbal instructions from their customer support agent, the alarms were cleaned and reset, but will return to error after just a few minutes or sometimes weeks later. After reading reviews on their website, many other people are experiencing the same problem. I'm concerned for the safety of my family and any other consumers that have purchased these combination alarms.

At least three times, during the middle of the night (always between 1 AM and 3 AM), one or more of the smoke detectors has gone off due to a false alarm. These false alarms could not be cleared easily because the faulty smoke detectors audibly reported that there was too much smoke to clear the device(s) - when, in fact, there was no fire and no smoke. When I attempted to get the faulty smoke detectors replaced, the manufacturer indicated that they couldn't replace my faulty smoke detector with a similar model because they have discontinued the product. When I checked the manufacturer's website, hundreds of consumers reported nearly the identical problem with repeated false alarms. Based on these experiences and the fact that they manufacturer has stopped making the faulty smoke detectors, it seems like it is a defective product that should be recalled because hundreds of people have already documented similar false alarms so it is (1) unclear that the Kidde smoke detectors work as described or (2) that consumers have discontinued using any smoke detectors given these false alarms, increasing the risk of indetected smoke and fire. The defective model number is P4010CS-W.

Source model text: i12080A. Incident: About 4:15 am our Kidde smoke alarms alarmed for about 1second, stopped, and then alarmed again for about 1 second. I inspected the house and there were no apparent fires or smoke. I then located the unit that initiated the alarm by seeing the red alarm lamp that went on and off periodically. I removed the alarm and inspected it. It was unusually warm to the touch and had the smell of electronics that was hot. I recognized the smell because I have an extensive background in electronics. It is Kidde model i12080A. Date of manufacturer June 21, 2017. It was install in my home in September of 2017. I have the product in hand and can turn it over to the CPSC if needed.

Source model text: Model P40 10DCSCO-W. Incident: I would like to report Kidde Smoke/CO Alarm with Voice and Wireless (model P40 10DCSCO-W). We had 7 detectors installed by our electrician around November 2023 after a recent home addition. Ever since installation, we have had near weekly false alarms. I followed instructions for possible interference (bad placement and/or needing to spray with compressed air). Nothing worked. After a week in September 2024 of 2-3 false alarms per day (often at 2am), I finally disabled the the 2-3 devices I though may be offending. Other neighbors have reported issues with these or similar alarms since this style of detector is required by County code as part of any permitted home improvements. Reviews on the Kidde website report similar experiences and 1 star reviews. While I fortunately cannot speak to whether these alarms identify true positives with fires (or CO2), I believe the false alarms create a safety issue by inuring or desensitizing consumers in to thinking alarms are not alerting them to and actual fire/CO2 or other unsafe event.

Beginning Sept 2012 and continuing through today, 4 of the 7 detectors have failed. This product is wired into a ceiling fixture and has a battery backup. In each failure the product gives a false alarm and cannot be silenced until it is unplugged from the ceiling AND the battery is removed. The none of the detectors is in a dusty area. Vacuuming the sensor to remove dust does not solve the problem.

There was no fire, and the smoke alarm was stored in its original box without being used. The smoke alarm was stored in an air-conditioned office building. I contacted the manufacturer to report this issue. The smoke alarm was manufactured in July 2019.

Source model text: Kidde Combo Smoke/CO Alarm Model # KN-COSM-IB. Incident: On Jan 30th, 2024, I was replacing the low battery in my Kidde Combination Smoke/CO Alarm Model KN-COSM-IB when I noticed the manufacturing date 2013, Oct 17. I started researching if it has a lifespan and if it should be replaced. That is when I learned about a safety recall notice - https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2017/Kidde-Recalls-Combination-Smoke-CO-Alarms. I learned from the recall notice that after the end of their life, these alarms are supposed to chirp until they are replaced. I contacted customer service, and they refused to replace these units even though they are faulty and have failed to notify me and my family that they should have been replaced after their end of life. I have two of these units installed in my house, and I was under the wrong impression they were working and saving my life. Even though the manufacturing date is later than what is mentioned in the recall notice, they are the same model with the same issue. Clearly, this company hadn't stopped making and selling this faulty model even after the dates mentioned in the recall notice, and my two units prove it so. They were supposed to chirp after the end of their life, and they haven't. I have been replacing the battery whenever there was a chirp for low battery, and they have been quiet after the replacement. It seems even the units made after the date in the recall notice of this model have the same problem. Can something be done about this faulty and dangerous product that fails to notify its own

Incident: I have recently installed 4 new (under manufacter warranty replacment Kidde P4010ACS photo electric smoke dectectors. They were due to the "failing" units originially installed Kidde units with newer updated model available. That was on 10/31/2023. Since then two different "false" alarms have been triggered. With two new replacement units being sent to "replace" them at this point. Concerning with reviews on the Kidde webiste as well as the noted CPSC complaints seen on this specific models performance issues and "false" alarms "audible" FIRE FIRE !!!! as part of home security systems too [REDACTED] had sent a fire department on site due to the triggering and "alarm" monitoring at home. This may be a larger problem with this model in particular. Hoping the manufaturing date codes and country of origin may help others on this as well. Have noted and will continue to monitor now with two complaints to Kidde directly #[REDACTED] on 2/14/24 and on 3/16/24 [REDACTED] (last one to replace two potentially defective units) as well as possilbe replacement with another model that is not prone to these "false" alarm concerns model #P4010ACS-WF that noted a very high rating of satisfaction 4.5+ versus their 1.0 star rating on the currently installed units in my home P4010ACS with many "false" alarm reportings on their site as well as this site CPSC.gov... a very concerning safety issue.

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20180619-B6567-2147387296. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Kidde Smoke Alarm model P4010DCS-W and p4010DCSCO-W (1. Kidde 10yr Worry-free Wireless Interconnect Smoke Alarms Model P4010DCS-W manufactured in November 2017 2. Kidde 10yr Worry-free Wireless Interconnect Smoke/CO Combo Alarms Model P4010DCSCO-W manufactured July 2017). Incident: I purchased a total of 8 kidde smoke alarms (Model P4010DCS-W) and Smoke/CO combo alarms (ModelP4010DCSCO-W) and installed them between 1/28/18 and 2/2/2018. These are 10yr alarms with wire-free interconnect. Since installation, I have had 3 alarms with batteries that failed. Also, the alarms regularly disconnect from each other and no longer alarm as a network. There is no warning or signal when an alarm disconnects. The first failed within 60 days. The second through fourth have failed within 5 months. I now have to test almost daily to ensure the alarms are powered. The "end of life" or "dead battery" or other failure alerts do not work or are non-existent. Kidde has replaced two of the alarms (after nearly 10 weeks of waiting), but has not acknowledged that there is a problem with their equipment. I was told they are a new technology and all of the bugs aren't worked out yet. They did not assure me that these actually work and will function in an emergency.
