SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20110901-16BA9-2147475744. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: Kenmore 665.13543N412. Source model text: 665.13819K601. Incident: The past three times that we have run our Kenmore dishwasher it has produced a burning smell and white smoke during the wash part of the "smart wash" cycle. The smell is coming from around the control panel and not from within the dishwasher. Each time the smell and smoke got worse. The last time we used it the smoke filled our kitchen. We have stopped the dishwasher mid-cycle each time it has happened and are no longer using the dishwasher. We have consulted a repairman who said this was a recurring problem with Kenmore dishwashers manufactured by Whirlpool during this time period and that we should discontinue use because it is a fire hazard.

Incident: Kenmore built in dishwasher's control unit on upper part of door caught fire. We were in the kitchen and were alerted by sizzling sounds. When we opened the dishwasher door, smoke and flames shot out and water sprayed over the kitchen since the cycle failed to stop. We were able to shut the unit down using the wall switch. The fire then extinguished itself. There was no damage other than to the machine itself, however had we not been in the room we most likely would have had a kitchen fire. This machine is 8.5 years old, so failure is not a big surprise. Nevertheless, the possibility of failure by burning up represents an unsafe design feature.

Incident: My dishwasher caught on fire. I had started my dishwasher and had gone to bed. After about 15 minutes or so I heard a strange noise and got up and went into the kitchen. There was black smoke billowing out of the top vents on my dishwasher and it had a very distinctive burning smell. I immediately opened the dishwasher door believing this would shut off the dishwasher. I was drenched with hot water as the water did not shut off and the dishwasher continued to run and fling water throughout my kitchen. So I closed the door and the smoke continued to flow. My husband went to the garage and turned off the circuit breaker and only then after a few minutes did the smoke dissipate.

Source model text: 665.16049403. Incident: My Kenmore dishwasher filled my house with smoke from the dishwasher. Upon checking the dishwasher after I turned it off and the smoke cleared. I look in the dishwasher on the element to see if something had melted on there. There was not anything. I looked under the dishwasher and pieces of the bottom of the dishwasher coating maybe had melted or caught on fire and when I looked further there were some really hard crispy pieces of this rubber coating falling off on the floor. I am not sure what caused it to catch fire but I am afraid to use the dishwasher because the smoke was very toxic smelling. I will call for a repair but I am not sure that it is something that can be repaired.

Incident: I purchased a Kenmore tall tub dishwasher in 2006. It recently developed a leak. I looked closely at the tub and observed water dripping from underneath. I looked inside the tub and there is (what I thought was food stains) a burnt spot directly under the heating element on the left side of the unit. This burn has created a noticeable crack in the tub and that is where it is leaking from. I have searched various web sites and came upon your report on these dishwashers being recalled for the motor catching fire but donot see anything specific to the heating element burning the tub. I have found several other consumers complaining about the same problem on various repair forums. My dishwasher is a KENMORE MODEL# 665.17033403, SERIAL# FT2210139.

Incident: Error lights came on. Oven broiler element red hot when oven was on "bake". We turned off oven (nothing else was on). We were in the kitchen for 15 minutes more and there was no further indication of a problem. About an hour later, our smoke detectors went off. We saw/smelled no smoke but when we checked the kitchen, stove was too hot to touch. Stove lights indicating hot burners were on, but stove and oven were off according to the control panel. We immediately flipped off circuit breaker. When stove cooled down, we looked closer. The oven had ash inside as though it had gone through cleaning cycle. The oven/broiler element(s) must have come on by themselves. Had we been away, we could have had a fire. Very scary!

Incident: Purchase a Kenmore dishwasher model 665.13032K113 about a year and a half ago. The heating element broke a piece off and burned a hole through the plastic dishwasher causing our floor to flood. The metal was so hot from the broken piece it actually made a hole through the plastic. A little longer and the hot piece of metal would have melted through completely though causing a risk of a fire below on floor or plastic parts below the dishwasher. Warranty did not cover but I think this is a safety issue more than anything and product should be recalled. Also we be contacting consumer rights groups and my personal attorney for immidiate refund as I believe it is not fair to have this for over a year and the amount to fix cost is greater than the purchase amount.

Incident: While fixing dinner today 5/10/11, I was using my Kenmore Self-Cleaning Electric Range model #665.9502210, Ser#RL1110117. I used the oven, set at 350. After 10 minutes I noted the food was burning, removed it, and turned the oven off. I prepared other items, we had dinner, then prepared to leave for soccer practice. My 9 yr old daughter brushed against the front door of the range and told me it was hot. The entire stove was blister hot to the touch and the top broiler element inside the oven was glowing red. The oven was off and had been for an hour. I wrapped wet towels around the oven door handle and pulled the device away from the wall. The sides and back of the range were also blister hot. I unplugged the power and the oven took nearly 3 hours to cool down. I tried to plug it back in and with the oven still off, the elements was glowing red hot again in under 5 minutes. I unplugged the device. Had not my daughter been burned, I have no doubt that we would have experienced a house fire had we gone on to soccer practice.

Incident: I was making muffins tonight in my Kenmore oven Model # 665-95781000. The oven was set to 350degrees. The first batch of 12 came out perfect. The second batch came out darker and when I pulled them out they were a little smokey. I figured I would bake the last batch of only 10 minutes instead of 12 like the others. About 5 minutes later, I smelled this awful smell. I walked into the kitchen and saw a fire on the muffins. My first reaction was to turn the oven off, then I opened the oven door and put the fire out on the muffin. I noticed how hot the oven felt. I started a fan to get the smoke out of the house and my kids were all scared. My husband came in and noticed that the top heating element was still glowing orange and that it wasnt shutting off. The only way we could turn the oven off was to turn off the breaker. This was a very scary event.

Incident: For the third time now since having my electric range, all of a sudden while cooking food in the oven, the temperature skyrockets out of controL, burning the food. The food would have caught fire if I was not in the kitchen when it happened. Then, once the burnt food has been removed from the oven, I cannot get the oven to shut off. The heating element continues to burn bright orange and produce major amounts of heat until we shut off the breaker to the oven. In the past, we have been able to turn the breaker back on and the oven has reset itself and has seemingly returned to normal. However, on this most recent occasion, once we turned the breaker back on, the heating element turned back on without us turning the oven on. When we came back into the house about 30 minutes later, we could smell something burning, which was the oven. We had no idea it would turn back on by itself.

Incident: We started our Kenmore Elite Dishwasher in the Smart Wash Mode, approximately five (5) minutes after entering the active wash cycle I smelled burning electrical and smoke and walked back into the kitchen to find smoke pouring out of the right front section of the control panel. I shut the machine off and secured power at the breaker. After the unit had cooled I removed the front panel section and found the source of the smoke was a small electrical fire on the control board. Upon further inspection I found burn damage at the following board components: Relay K2, Resuistor R9, Pin P8 on Connector #2. There is also evidence of heat damage at pin P6 on Connector #1, Capacitor C22 and a relay pack that I am assuming is K3 but there is too much soot damage to read the board. Un attended this fire, being in an under counter appliance could have easilt resulted in a house fire.

Incident: About 3 months ago after cooking in our range, we noticed that the broiler element was still on after we had shut the oven off. We could not get the broiler to shut off by manually pressing any of the buttons on the oven. All controls were set to off. Finally had to unplug the oven to get to turn off. We plugged it back in & all appeared to be ok at this point. Same thing happened about 5 days ago, the only difference being I had to keep it unplugged for a couple of hours before the element stayed off before plugging it back in. Today my daughter was baking a cake, when the broiler came on during the baking process & burnt the cake. This filled the oven & house with smoke causing our alarms to go off. I unplugged the oven to let it cool. Have tried to plug it back in several times within the last few hours & each time the broiler automatically turns back on. There is no other way to shut this off other than unplugging the unit. I feel that this is very unsafe & have had to keep the unit unplugged at all times fearing that it would automatically turn on & start a fire. I have searched online only to find that there are others out there that have had a very similar experience with this model.

It seemed like the smell was coming from the dishwasher, but was hard to know for sure. We paused the cycle to check inside the dishwasher but didn't notice anything that was wrong. After resuming the cycle, we continued to notice the smell. I'm not certain how long the dishwasher was running, but seemed longer than normal. Shortly after, I heard a pop sound and saw black smoke coming from the top right of the dishwasher door. I ran to the dishwasher to open the door and smoke continued to come out of the door. I told my son to watch the dishwasher while I ran downstairs to turn off the circuit breaker. After I turned off the breaker, I heard my son yelling fire from upstairs. Incident: In the later part of the dishwashing cycle ... my wife and I heard a "hissing noise" coming from our kitchen. We immediately went to the kitchen and discovered that the dishwasher was emitting white smoke from the upper right portion of the dishwasher. We also observed a strong odor of something electrical burning within the unit. We tried to cancel the cycle ... but the cancel button did not appear to work. I immediately turned off the circuit breaker to the dishwasher. We left the door to the dishwasher open and aired out the house. The next day I partially disassembled the front door so I could access what I think is called a control board (to the top right). After partially disassembling the control board housing I was able to observe black burn marks in various areas of the control board. Lucky that we were in the house when this happened (and awake). SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20121113-84B49-2147461999. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: Kenmore 665.13543N412. Source model text: 665. Incident: I started the dishwasher as normal on a regular cycle in the evening. About 15-20 minutes into the cycle I heard an unusual noise coming from the dishwasher. I came into the kitchen and could smell melted plastic and could see smoke (not steam) coming out of my dishwasher. I then opened up the door and when I did a snapping sound occurred and a horrible odor came out with more smoke. This happened again when I opened the door again to show my husband. I then removed all the dishes, unplugged the appliance, and left the door shut. I had a repair person come to check on it who said there was a fire in the front panel and the entire dishwasher would need to be rewired, which is illegal for them to do. She called to the service department to check on a recall, and they told her they had a number of written complaints about the dishwasher but did not see a recall. I then called Sears and after approximately 6 phone calls I was told there was no recall and was informed that all service calls related to any faulty appliance is directly reported from the service company to the Federal Agency in charge of recalls. I then contacted the service company and they told me that Sears had misinformed me: I would have to report the incident myself. My concern is that someone could have a fire, lose their home, or worse yet, their lives, because there is a fault in this dishwasher. If I had gone to bed, been out of the house, or even been in a different part of the house and not heard the nois

Incident: I put in a load of dishes and turned my dishwasher on. After a while, I smelled fumes. Upon entering my kitchen, I realized the fumes were coming from the dishwasher. I shut it off and opened it. And noticed that the heating ring located at the base of the dishwasher had melted away the plastic connecting pieces that held the ring in place. The whole house smelled horrible and I was horrified at the thought that this could have started a fire. I have not turned it on since because I fear what will happen. I literally fear for my life, that it'll burn my house down.

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20180425-24348-2147388359. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Kenmore 665.13543N412 (Kenmore Ultra wash dishwasher). Incident: On the evening of 4/23/18 at approximately 9:00 pm I set my 2 YEAR OLD Kenmore dishwasher on a 2 hour delay wash cycle. (I like to run the dishwasher at night so it does not interfere with showers, laundry, etc during the day time hours.) At 11 p.m. I heard the dishwasher start. I went to bed. At approximately 2 am (4/24/18) I was woken up by my daughter claiming that our dog startied barking, woke her up, shes hearing weird noises and there is a horrible smell in our house. I told her it was probably the dishwasher running and it was fine. She insisted that I get up and check. When I get up to go to the kitchen I smell something that smells like plastic burning and figured something had fallen on the heater coil of the dishwasher. When we get to the kitchen - there is a haze of smoke and the smell is overwhelming. I open the dishwasher to find that nothing has fallen or is melting on the coil but there is about an inch of water in the bottom of dishwasher. I run to the bathroom and before I can come out my daughter is screaming that water is all over the kitchen floor. As I come down the hall back to the kitchen (I had left the dishwasher door open) I see sparks then flames shooting out of the dishwasher door and theres a sizzling sound coming from the door! The door is so hot that you cannot touch it - just the handle. I call my parents for help and my dad comes down and disconnects the washer from electricity. I called Sears to see if theres any warranty/protection for this- was transferred to their repair who told me sorry about your luck and sorry this happened to
